Abstract

583,034. Variable-speed gearing. DERUNGS, E. A. Aug. 6, 1943, No. 12745. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1942. [Class 80 (ii)] In control mechanism for change speed gearing, of the kind described in Specification 573,734, the gear change lever 1 is connected to the selector mechanism by linkwork including a disengageable coupling 21, and the selector is connected to the change speed gears by links 8, 9, 10, including a spring coupling 11. The coupling 21 is such that for a part of the stroke of the lever 1 the operated machine is started or stopped, and during another part of the stroke a change of gear ratio is effected. A gear change is effected by a complete up-and-down oscillation of a lever 24 about an axis 25. The lever 24 is connected to the gear lever 1 by links 22, 23, 34, 35, Fig. 6. Links 22, 35, are pivoted about a fixed point 36, and link 34 is rigid with a disc sector 32 pivoted on one part 28 of the coupling 21. The other part 30 of the coupling is slidable in the part 28 and has an arcuate cut-out portion 31. In the position shown in Fig. 6, the machine is in operation. Movement of the lever 1 from I to II stops the machine but does not affect the gear change mechanism as the coupling part 30 slides into the part 28. During movement of the lever 1 from II to IV both parts of the coupling 21 move together and a complete oscillation of the lever 24 is made to change the gear ratio. At position IV the sector 32 again uncouples the parts 28, 30, so that during movement of the lever 1 from IV to V the part 30 slides within the part 28 and the machine is again started up. The same sequence of operations is repeated during reverse movement of the lever 1 from V to I. Each coupling 11, Fig. 3, comprises a sleeve 12 fixed to one part of a link such as 8 and a beaded rod 15 fixed to the other part of the link, a compressed spring 18 abutting flanges on sleeves 14, 17, carried by the rod 15. Thus the spring 18 is compressed whether a pull or a push is exerted on the link.
