Abstract

167,260. Smith, W. S., and Wilkinson, G. R. May 3, 1920. Steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.- A windmill, adapted to operate the control surface, is mounted so that its plane of rotation is automatically retained in or returned to an inoperative position in the direction of motion of the machine but may be turned by the pilot when the control surfaces are to be moved. The control surfaces are connected by a cord 13 to a drum 12 which is mounted on a bracket 10 fixed to the aircraft structure, and can be rotated by the windmill 4 through bevel gearing 15, 16, and a shaft 7. When the control surfaces are to be moved, the pilot turns a drum 18 by a cable 19, and, through a sun-wheel 17, a planet-wheel 20, and an annular wheel 23, turns the standard 6 to bring the windmill into action. The rotation of the shaft 7, in addition to operating the control surfaces, rotates a pinion 27, and through .gearing 30, 25, 24, 23, 20, turns the standard 6 until the plane of rotation of the windmill is .again in the direction of motion of the machine. The control surfaces may be disconnectable from the windmill by clutches which are arranged so that the drums 12, 18 are clutched together and simultaneously detached from their respective pinions 27, 17. An auxiliary small handoperated control surface may be connected to a cable 28 on the drum 18 to indicate the force resisted by the main control surface adjacent to it.
