Abstract

166,949. Rustproofing Syndicate, Ltd., and Newman, T. F. April 21, 1920. Coating; cleaning and pickling.-Adherent black oxide (Fe3O4) is prevented from forming on ferrous metal forgings &c. by dipping the forgings momentarily whilst at or near red heat into a solution of iron or other metallic sulphate whereby the water is decomposed and a slight film of oxide formed, which is easily removable in an acid pickling-bath or by electrolytic means. As an example, the coating-solution contains 1 lb. of iron sulphate to 1 gallon of water, and in this case red iron oxide (Fe2O3) is formed. Zinc sulphate and copper sulphate respectively form a readily removable combination of zinc oxide and black iron oxide and of cuprous oxide and red iron oxide.
