Couplings, non-automatic.-In a hook-and-eye coupling for colliery trams &c., the vertically dropping nose of the hook is prevented from disdisengagement foom the eye by a doubletailed pawl, one tail of which engages a recess in a plunger overhanging the pivot of the pawl. The pawl e is pivoted on a pin f which passes through the sides of the eye a, one tail e' of the pawl engages in a recess c<2> in a recess in the plunger g. On inserting the hook in the eye a, the point c depresses the tail e of the pawl, the other tail e' clears the point c of the hook, drops back into the recess c<2> and locks the hook. When the plunger is pressed upwards the tail e<2> is carried with it, so that the tail e' clears the recess c' and permits disengagement of the hook. Further movement of the plunger is prevented by the lug g<2> engaging a projection e<3> that the tails e', e<2> of the pawl cannot become vertically superposed.
