Planishing and beating.-In a portable sheetmetal-hammering machine, the hammer is yieldingly connected to a collar operated by a stud adjustably mounted in a diametrical groove in the face-plate of a shaft, which is driven by an electric motor mounted on a portable standard, which also supports an anvil or bed-block. The frame- 1, which supports the operating parts, is mounted on legs 4, and is formed in two hollow portions connected by bolts 30 and filled with concrete, sand, &c., to absorb vibrations without imparting them to the building frame as in the case of machines secured on the wall of the building or to a structure column. The motor shaft is connected by a coupling 9 to a shaft 8 having a friction cone 10 which may be connected by a pedal and levers 35, 36, 45, 37, 41, 38, 39, to a hollow cone 11 carried by a shaft 12 on which the face-plate 14 is mounted. A stud 15 is secured in a dovetailed groove in the face-plate by a nut 20 and flanged sleeve, on which is supported a collar 19 carrying a laminated spring 21, to the ends of which is connected a strip of flexible material such as leather, which supports the hammer block 23. The bed 27 is carried by a bracket 25 secured to the frame and provided with a reinforcing rod 31. The hammer head 24 and bed block 26 are removably mounted in dovetail grooves in their respective supports. The frame may support a similar set of mechanism on its other side, the hammer being operated from the same motor, but independently controlled.
