Abstract

Dip-pipes and hydraulic mains; purifying processes.-The liquid in a hydraulic main a flows by gravity through a pipe a<1> to a pressure box b, the depth of liquid in which is adjusted by a handwheel b<1>, and the level of the liquid in the hydraulic main is maintained by increasing the pressure in the pressure box b by introducing gas through a pipe d. The hydraulic main a and connecting-pipe a<1> form one limb of a U-tube, the other limb, which is lower, being formed by a partition of the pressure box, thus, to maintain the level in the higher limb, gaseous pressure is applied to the lower. The pressure gas is passed through a controller n which maintains the gas at constant pressure. Tar and liquor pass from the box b to a separator h, from which a portion of the hot liquor is pumped to a tank j, and is returned by a pipe m to the hydraulic main to assist in purification of the gas.
