Abstract

Magnetos, driving. -A miner's lamp is supplied with current from stationary coils k which surround permanent magnets j rotated by a vane wheel v by means of compressed air or other gas contained in a reservoir a. The gas is controlled by a valve e and issues from a nozzle s@. Instead of a vane wheel v, blades may be formed on the periphery of the magnets j. An initial impulse is given to the wheel v by means of a blade q carried by the spindle o of the valve e and engaging a wheel r on the axle of the wheel v. When the operating handle p is rotated to open the valve e the blade q gives a slight rotation to the wheel r. The initial impulse may also be given by the use of a valve e which allows gas at a higher pressure than is normally required to issue on the first movement of the valve, this initial high-pressure gas passing through the nozzle s or through a separate jet. The gas in the reservoir a may be forced in through an opening c, or it may be produced by chemical action in a chamber at the base of the lamp. Instead of the magnets j an ordinary wound armature may be used.
