Abstract
581,737. Gyroscopes for torpedoes &c. STONE PLATT ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and HATCHER, E. C. Dec. 16, 1942, No. 17873. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XXI] An electric gyroscope with an auxiliary turbine wheel to assist in starting is provided with a small chamber connected with the nozzle of the turbine for the reception of an explosive charge or cartridge, or of a highly compressed gas, electrical means being provided for igniting or releasing the charge when required. As shown in Fig. 1, the gyro shaft a driven by the electric rotor b within the stator c carries a turbine wheel e. When the circuit of the motor is closed by a switch, a cartridge within a chamber g is detonated and the gases therefrom pass through a nozzle f on to the turbine wheel and quickly impart a high speed to the gyro shaft. Instead of employing a cartridge, the chamber g may be filled, through a nipple l<1>, Fig. 2, with compressed air or gas and released to the nozzle by an electrically controlled needle valve m.
