163,496. Cleghorn, W. G. Feb. 21, 1920. Engines with main shaft parallel to axis of cylinder; driving-gear. -In engines or pumps with swash-plates or like driving mechanism, distance pieces with hemispherical ends are arranged between the pistons or their rods and spherical heads in the swashplates. In the internalcombustion engine shown in Fig. 1, a ring 1 provided with spherical heads 2 is mounted by means of ball and roller bearings 6a, 7 on an inclined disc C secured to the shaft, and is engaged by pieces 6 which engage the heads 2 and recesses in the piston-rods 4. Air used for scavenging may be compressed in the inner ends of the cylinders. In a modification, the pistons of opposed single-acting cylinders are cast in one, cut away at the centre, and carry recessed blocks which receive the ends of the pieces 6. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the star-shaped member 11 carrying the heads 2 is mounted on a universal joint 12, and drives the disc C through an inclined roller or ball bearing 13.
