Abstract
163,422. Godfrey, A. Feb. 9, 1920. Stops, adjustable.-In an oxyacetylene cutting-machine of the general type described in Specification 130,450, the movement of a handle to bring the cutting torch into the operative position opens cut-off valves controlling the oxygen and acetylene supplies and actuates an electric ignition device for the heating flame. In the construction shown, the shaft 5 of the handle 4 raises and lowers the cutter head through rack and pinion gearing and carries a cam formed with cam surfaces 36, 51. The cam surface 36 operates through a spring-pressed lever 37, a link 90, and a lever 61 the oxygen and acetylene cut-off valves 10, 13 which are geared together by toothed segments 26, 27. The cam surface 51 actuate the electric ignition device just before the cut-off valves are opened, a well on the cam face 51 allowing the sparking to continue long enough to ignite the gases. The oxygen and acetylene cut-off valves 10, 13 may be closed when the cutter head is in the lowered position by means of a handle 67 on the stem of the valve 10. The heating oxygen and acetylene supplies are regulated by means of needle valves 14, 63 operated by knurled heads 91 and pass through pipes 68, 69 to the mixing chamber of the burner nozzle 100. The cutting oxygen supply passes through the pipe 71 to the burner nozzle and is controlled by a spring valve 15 operated by an arm 34 which is held in the open position by engagement with a notch in a pivoted pawl 64. An abutment 66 on the link 90 disengages the pawl 64 from the arm 34 when the cut-off valves 10, 13 are closed, thus allowing the valve 15 to close also. According to one Provisional Specification, the cutting oxygen valve may be operated by a snail cam on a lever arm.
