Underframing of bodies.-In a railway or like vebicle, of the central buffing type, longitudinal members each of channel section and formed with a longitudinal corrugation in its web portion, are incorporated in, or constitute a sub-underframe for attachment to a main underframe for the purpose of resisting the compressive stresses due to buffing. The corrugations f, g are situated about the middle of the greatest depth of the web, g projecting in the same direction as the flange at the deep end portion, and f, at the middle shallow portion, in the reverse direction. The central corrugation f may merge into the lower flange d. The top or bottom flange or both may be tapered from a lesser to a greater width between the headstocks and first cross-bars h. The striking-plates and carriers i and i<1> of the buffer gear are secured to the closed ends j of the longitudinal members and the end transverse member h.
