RAILWAY VEHICLE UNDERFRAME Filed Oct. 17, 1931 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 In V6)? far Patented July 5, 1932 UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE ADELBERT G. WINTEMBERG, OF DREXEL HILL, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL STEEL CASTINGS CORPORATION, OF GRANITE CITY, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE RAILWAY VEHICLE UNDEBFRAME Application filed October 17, 1931.
The invention relates to railway rolling stock and consists in an improved construction of underframing for railway vehicles intended primarily to carry water and fuel and the invention is particularly adapted for use in locomotive tender construction.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive underframe casting which in itself may form the bottom of a locomotive tender structure and upon which the sides and ends of the superstructure may be mounted thereby lightening the weight of the-tender by eliminating a separate tank bottom.
Another object of the invention is to embody novel features in spaced center sill construction for supporting the vertical longitudinal members of a coal hopper superstructure mounted on and near one end of the underframe.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel features in construction of the underframe and rear end draft gear pocket integral therewith for transmitting the pulling and bufiing forces set up in the draft gear pocket to the center sill members of the underframe.
The invention consists in all the novel features hereinafter disclosed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which A Figure 1 is a top view of a locomotive tender underframe embodying the invention.-
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the underframe taken along the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side view of the underframe.
Figure 4 is a rear end view of the underframe.
Figure 5 is a front end view of the underframe..
Figures 6 to 11 inclusive are detail transverse vertical sections taken alongthe lines 66, 77, 88, 9-9,- 1010, and 1111 respectively of Figure 1.
Figure 12 is a fragmentary detail horizontal section taken along the line 1212 of Figure 3. v
Figure 13 is a fra mentary detail horizontal section taken along the line 1313 of Figure 2.

also between the center sills and is substantially imperforate throughout its area to form the bottom of the tender tank.
Suitable openin s are provided in the transoms, bolsters, an center sills to permit free passage of water therethrough.
Center sills 4 are of T shaped construction and are provided above the bottom web 16 and extend longitudinally the full length of the underframe between the end sills. These center sills are spaced so that they are located directly below the vertical longitudinal supports 17 for the coal hopper at the front end of the tender.
It is apparent that the improved type of construction permits the use of a simpler and lighter casting than previous constructions having a box shaped center sill extending the full length of the underframe and spaced longitudinal members on each side of the box shaped center sill at the front end for supporting the vertical longitudinal bracing members below the coal hopper.
Draft gear pocket 15, provided below the web 16 and the rear end sill 3, has spaced vertical webs 18 spaced a less distance apart than the spaced center sills 4 located above the web 16. Longitudinal reinforcing members 19 are provided above the web 16 as integral parts ofthe underframe'and in vertical alignment with the vertical webs 18.
Transom member 20 is of substantially box shaped construction and is provided between the spaced center sills 4 and is integral with said center sills and the reinforcing members 19 to transmit the pulling and bufiing forces to the center sills 4:.
Obviously various features and details herein disclosed may be modified without causing departure from the spirit of the in vention and exclusive use of all features coming within the scope of the claims is contemplated.
What is claimed is:
1. In a railway vehicle underframe arranged to serve as a water tight bottom for a tank superstructure applied thereto, a web plate disposed substantially horizontally, centrally disposed longitudinal sill elements extending upwardly from said plate, and a draft gear pocket below said plate, said pocket having vertical walls located intermediate said elements and merging with said web plate.
2.
