CAR-UNDERFBAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
T0 at? whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, CHARLES E. DATI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi- 0, the county of Cook and State of nois, have invented a certain new and usefui improvement in Car-Underframes, or which the following is a full, clear, coneise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car underframe structures.
The object of the invention is to rovide improved underframe structure or passenger cars, and more particularly for the platform and draft-rigging.
nether and more specific object of the invention is to provide an improved form of casting for passenger car platforms,
only adapted to supwhich casting is not port the louder stems, but which is arranged for the gear of the to act as a front stop draft-rigging.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices herein shown, described and claimed.
in the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view of the end portion of a passenger car, showing my improvement 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged, transverse, vertical sectional view taken substantially on the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 1s a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 1-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective of the casting at the end of the car. And Fig. 6 is a detailed sectional view of the car'structure adjacent the body bolster illustrating a modification of the structure shown in the other figures, the section of Fig. 6 corresponding to the section shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to said drawing, 10, 10 denote the center sills, 11', 11 the portions of the body bolster, 12 a filler plate-of the bolster between the sills, and 13 the center pin castward extension ing of the bolster. Secured to the sills '10 and extending forwardly to the end of the car are channel shaped center sill extensions 14, 14, the latter having their flanges turned outwardly. Mounted between the sills and riveted to the center sills and center sill extensions is a rear stop casting 15, having a front vertical wall 16 which, at its lower portion, forms a stop for the rear end of the yoke 17 to abut against, and at its upper portion forms a rear stop for the buffer mechanism designated generally by the reference A. The buffer mechanism A is supported by inverted U-shaped plates 18, having a horizontal plate 118 secured thereto, which plates 18 are mounted between and bolted to the center sill extensions 14:. Another plate 19 extends over the bufler mechanism to form 'a chamber therefor, said plate 19 having lateral flanges 20, 20, which are secured to the upper flanges of said sill extensions 14. The yoke 17 is arranged horizontally, and has the arms thereof slotted to receive a coupler key 21, said coupler key connecting the yoke to the draw bar 22. Mounted within the yoke 17 is a friction gear 23, said ear being between the rear follower 24 and the front follower 25. The platform extension. is formed by a casting designated generally by the reference B, said casting B having a hollow for- 26, having three passageways 30, 31 and 32 extending therethrough, the passageways buffer side stems 33, and the center passageway 31 being for the main bufier stem 34. Said'extension 26 of the casting B is preferably curved on its front face as indicated at 35 between the passageways 30 and 32. On its rear face, the casting B has a transversely extending shoulder 36 across the top thereof, which is adapted to abut one of the transversely arranged members 37 of the car floor.
Suitable wear plates 38, 38 are 30 and 32 being for the Patented Jan. 30, 1913.
detachably supported in the casting B for the buffer side and main stems. At its rear, the casting B is provided with a vertical wall 39, which is extended downwardly so as to form a transverselyextending, horizontal shoulder forthe front follower 25 to abut against. At its sides, the casting B is provided with depending flanges 40, 40 IlV- eted to the end sill of the car, and below the center passageway 31 the casting Bis extended downwardly with a hollow, box-like formation 41, which fits between and is riveted to the center sill extensions 14. :To
form the lower front stop for'the follower 25, a casting C is provided, the same being riveted to the lower flanges of the sills 14. Said casting C is provided on itsupper face with a fiat, horizontal table portion 42 on Y which the butt of-the ed to slide, so that the draw-bar is p'roperly supported in alinement with the gear, and the coupler key 21 relieved of the weight. of the coupler. A carry iron 43 is provided to support the front portion of the coupler, said carry iron 43 being of angular cross-section and" supported by bolts 44, which pass up through sleeves 45 and through a horizontal flange 46 formed in the casting From the preceding description it will be seen that the castin Bnot only serves to support the stems of the buffer mechanism, but is so arranged as to provide a front stop for the front follower of the draft gear. so Also, the casting l5-acts as a rear stop for both the gear of the draftrigging and the buffer mechanism proper.
23 is supported in positioncby means of' a detachable, channeled saddle 'plate 47. By removing-said plate 47, the gear 23 can be dropped downwardly without disturbing the draw-bar, and in order to facilitate access to the bufl'ermechanism, the plates 18 are detachably secured to the sills 14 by bolts 48, sothat by removing the bolts' and the .plates 18, which carry the table 118, the buffer mechanism.A may also the latter instance, however, it would also benecessary to remove the yoke.
" Fig. 6, the rear stop casting 116 is made integral with the bolster filler 49, thu'sminimizing the number oflarger riveting area for the rear stop casting with the center sills.
