My invention relates to railway vehicles and consists in a platform structure arranged to support an engine and a generator.
Economy of weight is of particular importanoe in the construction of a railway car which carries its own source of power and' Since the size of the car is limited, theA power unit should take up as small a space as possible in order to leave the maximum portion of the car for the accommodation of passengers. As a small power unit means' a limitation` of the power, there is again the necessity of economizing in the matter of weight in the car construction.
With a view to lightening the structure of this type of car, I have devised an integral structure consisting of a platform and engine and generator base by which I eliminate a substantial amount of Weight which would be required if the platform structure were structurally complete in itself and the engine and generator base applied thereto in the lusual manner.
' The main object of my invention is to pro- .vide an integral platform and power plant supporting structure that will mount the power plant above the level of the lioor of the vehicle, and I produce a structure of less weight than an assembled structure of 'the saine strength would have, and I save the expense of a great deal of the machining, dr11ling and tting incident tov an assembled structure. Also the embodiment in a unitary structure permits greater strength and rigidity, thus greatly reducing the ill effects of vibratory forces and eliminating maintenance.
This general and other more detailed objects of my invention are attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my platform and supporting structure.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of my platform" and supporting structure, showing the motor and generator mounted thereon.
Figure 3 is in part a cross section and in part an end view of my platform and supporting structure taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section of my platform and supporting structure taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fi ure 1.
T he platform includes an end si l 1, longitudinal sills 2 and a bolster 3. vThe longitudinal sills are connected by additional cross members 4 and together function as spaced longitudinal pulling and buling members.
The longitudinal sills 2 have deepened portions 8 at their forward ends beneath and adjacent to the end sill and these deepened portions are spaced rather close together to accommodate a coupler draw bar and draft' rigging (not shown.) which will be mounted between the lugs 9. The sills 2 diverge rearwardly of portions 8 and upstanding webs 5 thereon are provided with top anges 6 having finished pads 6a to which the engine crank case E may be bolted. Webs are reinforced with suitable ribs 7 and between ribs 7 are provided with openings 10 lwhereby the structure is lightened without material sacrifice of strength.
At the rear of the bolster 3, sills 2 are offset inwardly as shown at 11 for attachnient to the car center sills 11a. The webs 5, however, extend upwardly from the brackets 12a on bolster 3. These brackets and webs are offset outwardly as shown at 12 to accommodate an electric generator G of greater width than the engine E, the ianges 6 continuing to the rear of the structure for mounting the generator.
Suitable horizontal flanges 15 extend throughout the structure and at the level of the tops of the end sill and bolster serve to mount the floor plates F and the ends ofthe end sill and bolster have depressed flanges 13 adapted to mount the lower sills S of the (Y rial and dicult to get at.

The structure is illustrated as comprising a one piece casting and such is the preferred construction of my platform, but it is within the spirit of my invention to form some of the parts separately and unite them by welding into an integral whole having the advantages of a single casting.
The construction described provides for efficient distribution of metal in a platform adequate to carry the weight of the power lant and superstructure and to transmit the uiling and pulling forces without undue increase in weight over an ordinary platform. The lower portion of the crank case of the en ine may be removed and access to the interior of the crank case is unobstructed. The castin of the platform makes possible the use o? suitable gusset-like elements 14 for strengthening the structure without clumsy overlappin joints requiring surplus mate- The platform is always rigid as there are no bolted or riveted connections to loosen up. Hence the alinement of the power plant parts is maintained and the operation of the engine and generator improved. Obviously the general objects of my invention as stated in the intro ductory art of this specification are attained to a mar ed degree.
I have illustrated and described a single embodiment of m invention and it will be understood that t e details of the structure may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. I contemplate the exclusive use of all the modifications of my structure which come within the scope of my claims.
I claim:
1. In a railway car underframe, a pair of lon itudinal sills including floor supports, sai sills being spaced apart at their forward ends to form a draft gear mounting and more widely spaced apart at the rear of said mounting, upwardA extensions on the more widely spaced portions of said sills providing supports for anengine located aboverthe f level of said floor supports, said sills extending rearwardly of said supports and their extensions being more closely spaced together for connection with the car center sills.
2. A car underframe integral structure comprising a bolster, a longitudinal sill, and upstanding members on said sill on either side of said bolster for supporting an engine and generator respectively.
3. A car underframe integral structure comprising a bolster, a longitudinal sill, upstandin members on said sill on either side of said bolster for supporting an engine and generator respectively, and an integral connection between said members spaced above said sill.
4. In a railway vehicle end platform casting,.an end sill, an adjacent bolster, and suports between and integral with said sill and olster for cradling an" engine.
5. In a railway vehicle platform having longitudinal sills, a bolster, spaced long1- tudinal members integral with said sills and bolster and extending upwardly therefrom, said longitudinal members being arran ed to support an engine and a generator and eing spaced a greater distance apartat the rear of said bolster at their generator supporting portion than in front of said bolster at their engine supporting portion.
6. In a railway car underframe, a pair of longitudinal sills including iioor supports, upstandin structures on portions of said sills provi ing supports for an engine located above the level of said floor supports, said sills converging forwardly of said engine supports to form a draft gear mounting.
7. In a railway car underframe end platform, a pair of longitudinal sills including Hoor supports, said sills being spaced apart `at their forward ends to form a draft gear mounting and more widely spaced apart at the rear of said mounting, upst-anding structures on the more widely spaced portlons of said sills providing supports for an engine located above the level of said floor supports,
said structures extending in diverging directions at the rear of the platform and forming more widely spaced supports for a generator.
8. In a railway car underframe platform, a pair of longitudinal sills including floor supports, said sills being spaced apart at their forward ends to form a draft gear mounting and more widely spaced apart at the rear of said mounting, upstanding structures on the more widely spaced portions of said sills providing supports for an engine located above the level of said floor supports, the rear portions of said sills extending rearwardly of said supports and said portions being closer together for connection with the car center sills, said upstanding structures diverging at the rear of the platform and orming more widely spaced supports for a generator.
9. 11. A car underframe integral platform comprising a bolster, a longitudinal sill extending from one side of said bolster, a bracket extending from the other side of said bolster, and engme and generator supporting structures respectively upstanding on said sill on one side of said bolster and from said bracket on the other side of said bolster, said bracket and generator supporting structure being spaced farther from the longitudinal center of the platform than said sill and engine vsupporting structure.
12. In a railway vehicle end platform structure, upstanding power plant support y elements integral with at least a portion of said structure and integral rearwardly proj ecting elements adapted to be secured to the adjacent underframe.
13. As a new article of manufacture, anv
integral structure comprising a railway vehicle end platform member having upstandng power plant sup ort elements thereon, said member being a apted to be secured to adjacent portions of the vehicle underframe.
