GENERAL STEEL CASTINGS CORPORATION,
RATION OF DELAWARE My invention relates to railway rollingstock and consists in a novel locomotive structure, and more particularly in the novel construction of the locomotive framing adjacent I therewith of the usual cylinder saddle.
The main object of my invention is to provide'for a shallow body center plate thereby eliminating the overturning moment .in the center plate which would be attained if a separate center plate were attached directly to the underside of the cylinder casting. I attaken on the line 66 of Figure 1.
tain this object by providing a locomotive underframing with side members and relatively shallow transverse members between the side members which are adapted to have a sepa-.
rate body center plate attached to the underside thereof, and preferably above the level of the bottoms of the side members.
Another object of my invention is to provide such side members and transverse members with pads on their upper faces for sup porting the cylindersaddle casting or castings, thereby providing for very rigid construction and for thetransmission of vertical loads directly from the cylindersaddle casting to the transverse members and body center plate, without necessarily transferring the load through the side members.
It is a further object of my invention, in its preferred form, to provide the vdesired structure in a one-piece locomotive frame or bed casting so as to eliminate the labor and material necessary for securing separately formed members to each other and to eliminate the possibility of play between assembled members due to loosening of the securing means. Such structure also permits the most eflicient distribution of metal to secure required strength.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a selected embodiment of my inven-.
tion
Figure 1 is a top view of one longitudinal half of the forward portion of a locomotive bed, the wheels and a portion of the cylinder casting'being indicated in dot and dash lines. F igure'2 is a. side elevation of the same structure showing a portion of the cylinder on the line t 3 of Figure 2.

saddle casting in section on a plane parallel with and contiguous to the cylinder saddle mounting surface on the side of the bed.
The left hand side of Fi ure 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2 and the right hand side of Figure 3 is a section taken Figure 4 is a 'longitudinal vertical section taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a bottom view of a longitudinal portion of the bed immediately below the center plate mounting elements.
Figure 6 is a vertical transverse section The bed comprises parallel side members 1 each preferably constituting a box-shaped box-shaped in cross section. The front end of the bed terminates. in a transverse pilot beam 7 extending laterally of the side frames 1.
Parallel transverse members 8 connect side members 1 and preferably have their top surfaces 9 flush with the top surfaces of the saddle mounting pads 4 on the side members. These surfaces 9 also serve to engage the bottom of the cylinder saddle casting 10 and afford support for the same between the sides of the frame.
The bottoms of the transverse members 8 are located a substantial distance above the level of the bottom of the side members and the bottom surfaces 20 serve to mount a body center plate 11 which will extend between the two transverse members 8 and will project downwardly therefrom to engage a suitable truck center plate 12 and be connected therewith byvthe center pin 13. The bottom wall 6 of the underframe is provided with an elongated recess 14 beneath the center plate carrying members 8 to accommodate the extension of the center plates across the level of the bottom of the frame.
I also desire to provide means for bracing and reinforcing the cylinder saddle casting at a point near its lower wall 10" and I show such means in the form of a bracket 16 to.
which may be bolted the vertical flange 17 ,on the rear wall 18 of the cylinder saddle. This structure reduces the strain between the bottom and rear walls of the cylinder saddle.
The above structure attains, in a very simple and effective manner, the objects set forth in the fore art of the specification. The engagement of the transverse members with the underside of the cylinder saddle practically eliminates any upward deflection of the transverse members due to the thrust of the center plate, and the arrangement of the transverse members is such that the holes 15 for the bolts for securing the cylinders or cylinder saddle member can be reamed and the bolts applied without interference.
' It is obvious that, in a structure of this type, many of the details may be modified without departing from the essential features of the structure and I contemplate the exclusive use of such variations in detail structure as come within the scope of my claims.
I claim:
