ASSIGNOR TO THE OHIO STEEL FOUNDRY CO., OF LIMA, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
` cass-STEEL TENDER FRAME.
App1ication:led January 12, 1927. Serial No. 160,548.
'lhis invention relates to improvements in car frames, and more particularly to locomotive tender frames, although not necessarily restricted to such use.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide an improved main frame formed in a single casting including holsters, end frame members and a center supporting member, with integral flooring board securing strips carried by the latter, and further, to provide jacking pieces secured to the ends of the holsters so as to permit the entire body to be raised from the cartrucks when desired.
The invention may best be understood by reference to the` accompanying drawings, in which i Figures 1A and 1B together constitute a plan `View of a tender frame constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figures 2A and 2B together show a longitudinal section of the frame shown in Figures lA and 1B.
Figure 3 is a section of a,bolster taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1A.
Figure 4 is a detail of a jacking piece adapted to be secured on the end of the bolster.
Figure 5 is a bottom View of the bolster end to which a jacking piece may be secured.
Figure 6 is a bottom view of a jacking piece.
Figure 7 is a modified form of bolster having a jacking piece formed integral therewith.
Referring now to details shown in the drawings, the tender frame illustrated comprises a centrally disposed longitudinal beam 10, bolsters lil-11, end frame members 12-12 and an intermediate transverse supporting piece 12S- 13. All of the parts above mentioned are preferably formed in a single piece casting, as shown, the main beam and bolster 11 being generally a hollow box-like structure, as clearly shown in Figures 2A, 2B and 3. The bolsters 11-11 are provided with bearing apertures 15-15 adapted to receive the central bearing-pin of the truck in the usual manner. Portions of the trucks are not shown herein, as they orm no part of the present invention. Suitable reinforcing means are provided adjacent the bolsters 11-l1, herein comprising centrally disposed webs 16-16 formed in the side walls of the main longitudinal beam 10 These strips project upwardly and are adapted to engage in corresponding grooves formed in the usual floor boards of the tender so as to restrain them from lateral displacement. In the form shown, two of such interlocking strips 20-20 are shown, and' in Figure 3 the position of the overlying floor boards are indicated at 21 b means of dotted lines. It will be un erstood, of course, that any number of such interlocking strips may be utilized, and that the relative arrangement and width of the boards may be varied Widely from that shown.
In connection with the bolsters ll-ll which are formed integrally and have reinforced connection with the remaining portions of the main frame casting, I rovide.
a pair of jacking supports 25f25 orming lateral extensions of the bolsters 11-1l. In the form shown in Figure 3, these jacking supports are formed of separate castings having'a horizontal bearing surface 26 and an inclined connecting plate 27 by means of which the support is detachably secured to a cooperating supporting face 28 formed on the extreme end of the bolster l1. In the preferred form shown, the bolster is provided with a shoulder 29 at the upper end of the supporting face 28 against which the supporting face 28 fits when the support is attached, as shown. The arrangement is such that the horizontal jacking surface 26 projects laterally in position to be readily engaged by a hoisting jack of the usual form, for this purpose, of course, the projection being suiiicient to clear the side of .the track rails and' truck.
In the modified form shown in Figure 7 the jacking support is shown formed integral with the bolster 11.
From the above description of the jacking support it will be seen that the latter is attached directly to the bolster in position to be engaged by a jack and lift the entire main frame from the truck when desired.
The entire structure affords a most substan- ,Y
tial main frame casting, without the usual rality of interlocking strips formed in- 10 provision of side-sills, and yet having means tegrally valong the upper surface of said suitable for jacking the entire frame, main beam and adapted to have interlockthrough the holsters themselves. v ing engagement with the floor boards laid 5 I claim as my invention: thereover.
