ELMYR A. LAUGHLEN, OF OREGON, ILLINOIS.

Y iaoaaai.
To all inkom t may concern.'
Be it Vknown that I, ELMYR A. LAUGHLIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Oregon, county of Ogle, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Bolsters, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to improvements in carbolsters, especially adapted for use as a truck bolster of a railway truck, and has for its object the provision of a light, strong and durable construction of this character, which is highly. efiicient in use.
Another object vof the invention is the provision of surh a bolster arranged and adapted to `be readily cast inV one integral piece. j
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which,v Y
Fig. 1 is a top plan view, shown partially i'n'horizontal section, of a truck bolster embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, y
Fig. 3 is an ,end view of the same, and
Fig. f1 is a bottom plan view of the same.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in thel drawings,` comprises a bolster member 5 .made in channel form with itsfopen side down and of substantially the same'depth from end to end. The channel member 5 is provided centrally with a renter bearing` comprising a vertical oblong sleeve 6 extending the 4full depth of the channel member 5, and. having its sides joined to the sides of said channel member by means of transverse reinforcing webs 7, as shown. ArrangedV on top of the channel member 5 is an annular oblong flange 8 surrounding the opening of sleeve '6 and reinforced by radiating webs 9 as indicated, and whereby a suitable center bearing for the truck bolster is provided.
Arranged on top of the channel member 5, adjacent each end thereof, is a box-like side bearing member 10, adapted and arranged to contain any usual or desired form of rocker side bearings for the car body. The outer wall of each of the side bearing mem.d

bers 10 is reinforced by webs 11 andthe inner wall 12 thereof is made hollow and provided with a comparatively wide fiat top surface 13 adapted to constitute a slide bearingYco-operating with the usual slide bearings on a car bolster, and whereby a very strong and rigid inner wall is provided. This inner wall is further reinforced by means of stiifening webs 14, as shown. Each end of the' channel member 5 is further reinforced by means of a longitudinal centrally arranged reinforcing web 15 extending inwardly from each end of the channel substantially the full depth thereof, Vand to a point under the corresponding side bearing member 10, the inner end of the web 15 being beveled upwardly at 15. A transverse reinforcing web 16 is arranged substantially centrally under each of the side bearing members 10 extending the full width and depth, of the channel member, and joined with the web 15 and the sides'of said channel member. A reinforcing bottom plate 17 yextends inwardly from each end of the channel 5 the full width thereof and joining at its inner end with the bottom of the corresponding transverse web 16. At each side of each end the vchannel 'member 5 is provided with lateral lugs 18, forming guide members for engagement'with the usual side frame of the eartruck inthe usual way.
As shown all parts of thel bolster are formed integral with each other and from a single steel casting, and whereby the economical production of the bolster is greatly facilitated. The construction disclosed is a strong, durable and highly efficient one for the purpose and very light in weight, thus further facilitating economical production. The'specic form and arrangement of the respective parts is a simple and efiicient one ,for the purpose and `permits of the readyjcasting of the bolster all in one piece and 'at a single casting operation.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i l. A. bolster in channel form arranged with its open side down; side bearing mem? bers formed on the top of said channel ad: jacent to each end thereof; a longitudinal reinforcing web extending substantially centrally from each end of said channel inwardly substantially the full depth of said channel to a point beneath the corresponding side bearing member, the inner end thereof being beveled upwardly; a transverse reinforcing web arranged substane tially centrally under each `side bearing lmember extending across and substantially the full depth of said channel; and a bottom reinforcing plate extending from each-end of said channel inwardly substantially vthe full width thereofA and joining with the bottom of said web, substantially as described.
2. A. bolster in channel yform arranged f Vwith its open side down and of substantially uniform depth from end to end; a centery bearing formed-in said bolster consisting of a vertically arranged sleeve extending substantially the full depth of said channel;
Y and transverse Webs joining the sides of saidsleeve with the sides of said channel, substantially as described. v
3, A bolster in channel form arranged with `its open side down; side bearing members formed. on the top of said channel adjacent to each endthereof; a longitudinal reinforcing web extending substantially centrally from each end of said channel inwardly substantially the full depth of said channel to a point beneath the correspond- Y ing side bearing member,` the inner end thereof being' beveled upwardly; a transverse reinforcing web arranged substantially centrally under each side bearing member extending across substantially the full depth of said channel; a bottom reinforcing plate extending from each. end of said channel inwardly substantially the full width thereof and joining with the bottom of said transverse reinforcing web; and a center bearing formed in said bolster consisting of a vertically arranged sleeve extending substantially the full depth of said channel, and transverse webs joining the sides of said sleeves with the sides of said channel, substantially as described.
4:. A bolster in channel form arranged with its open side down and of substantially by stifening Webs andan inner hollow wallA provided with an upper fiat bearing surface Y and reinforced on the inner side Vby stifening webs; a longitudinal reinforcing lweb extending substantially centrally from each end of said Vchannel inwardly Vsubstantially the full depthof said channel to a point beneath the corresponding side bearing member, the inner end thereof being beveled upwardly; a transverse reinforcing weblarranged substantiallycentrally underv each side bearing member and extending across and substantially the full `depth of said channel; a bottom reinforcing plate'` extending from each end of said channel inwardly substantially the full width thereof and joining with the bottom of said transverse reinforcingY web; a center bearing formed in said bolster consisting of a vertically arranged oblong vsleeve extending substantially the full depth of said channel and transverse webs joining the sides ofsaid sleeve with the sides ofsaid channel; and an oblong annular fiange onltop of'said channel surrounding said sleeve, said flange being reinforced by radiating webs, Vsubstantially as described.
5. A bolster in channel form arranged with its open sidev down. of vsubstantially uniform depth from end to end; side bearing members formed on the top of said channel adjacent eachend thereof; a longitudinal reinforcing Vweb extending substantially centrally from each end of said channel inwardly substantially the full depth of said channel to a point beneath .the corresponding side bearing member; and a transverse reinforcing web arranged substan-V tially centrally under each side bearing member and extending across and substantially the full depth of said channel and joined with the corresponding longitudinalV ELMYR A.
