SPECIFICATION formi-ng part of Letters Patent No. '734,324,`dated July 21, 1903. Application filed January 4, 1900. Serial No. 345. (No model.)
delphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Body- Bolsters for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a bolster in the use of which the car-body is lowered with relation to the truck and which also provides a`bet-ter support for the floor-of the car-body than has heretofore been alord ed, and, further, to provide a bolster of economical and strong construction.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

The bolster has an upper flangel, a lower ange 2, and a centrally-located vertical connecting-web 3.
The bolster considered as a whole and which is preferably cast in one piece (although this need not of necessity be done) has elevated ends and middle portions 4 5 6 and depressed intermediate portions 7 and 8. The dat top surfaces of the elevated portions are designed to bear against the floor 8at of the car and support it, as shown in rFig. 2, while the upper faces of the depressed portions are formed with grooves 9 torreceive the inner sills 10 of the car-body, the outer 'sills 11 resting upon the ledgesl 12 at the ends of the bolster, all as shown. With a bolster thus formed a good support is afforded for the car-door, and the car-bodyris lowered considerably, which is a desirable feature.
To strengthen the bolster at the lowest parts of the depressed portions, which are vertically the thinnest parts of the bolster, I widen the upper ange 1 directly beneath the sills, as shown at 13, Fig. 4. The ledges 1,2 are formed by dropping the web of the liange 1-6, as at 12,` to provide a rm backing for the side or outer sills 11, to which the webl2n is secured by bolts,.&c., passed through ears l2b on the web 12a. strengthen these parts. The ooring SiL being secured to the 'sillslO and 11 and to the bolster, as before described, a firm structure is produced.

The center bearing is an integral part of the bolster and is provided with walls 17 and a bore 18t`or a king-bolt, and the side bearings may either be integral or, as shown, may be separate parts bolted to perforated ears 16, cast on the lower flange 2.
I claim as my inventionl. A body-bolster for railway-cars formed with elevated outer and middle portions and depressed intermediate portions, substantially as set forth.
2. A body-bolster for railway-cars formed with elevated outer and middle portions, and depressed intermediate portions having Webs 19 support and grooves to receive the sills of the car-body,

A body-bolster for railway-cars formed with elevated outer and middle portions adapted to bear against the floor of the carbody, depressed intermediate portions adapted to receive the inner sills ot the car-body, and end ledges adaptedto receive the outer sills of the car-body, substantially as described.
4. A body-bolster for `railway-cars formed Ywith an upper and a lower flange and a centrally-located vertical connecting-web; said bolster having elevated outer and middle/portions,.and depressed intermediate portions, substantially'as and for the purposes set forth.

A body-bolster for railway-cars, constructed with an upper flange formed with elevated outer and middle parts, and depressed intermediate parts, with a lower flange formed with elevated outer parts, and a depressed intermediate part, and a vertical connecting-web extending between the upper and lower flange, substantially as set forth.
8. A body-bolster for railway-cars, constructed with an upper flange formed with elevated outer and middle parts, and depressed intermediate parts, having lateral grooves to receive the sills of the car-body, and with a lower flange formed with elevated outer parts,and depressed intermediate parts, substantially as set forth.
9. A hody-bolster for railway-cars constructed with an upper flange formed with elevated outer and middle parts adapted to bear against the floor of the car-body, depressed intermediate parts adapted to receive the intermediate sills of the car-body, and end ledges adapted to receive the outer sills of the car-body, and provided with a lower flange formed with elevated outer parts, and.
a depressed intermediate part, substantially as set forth.
10. A body-bolster for railway-cars, constructed with an upper and a lower flange, and a centrally-located vertical connectingweb; said bolster having elevated outer and middle parts and depressed intermediate parts at top and bottom; substantially as set forth.
11. A body-bolster for railway-cars constructed with an upper flange formed with elevated outer and middle parts and depressed intermediate parts; and alower flange formed with elevated outer parts, and a depressed intermediate part, said outer and middle parts of the lower flange being provided with center and side bearings on the lower surface; substantially as set forth.
12. A body-bolster for railway-cars having end and intermediate depressions adapted to receive the outer and intermediate car-sills, and elevations intermediate of the depressions to support the carflooring, substantially as set forth.
13. A body-bolster for railway-cars having end ledges to receive the outer sills, and ears for securing the sills, intermediate depressions to receive the intermediate sills, and elevations intermediate of the said depressions to support the'car-flooring, substantially as set forth.
14. A body-bolster for railway-cars constructed with an upper and a lower flange, the upper flange being formed with elevated outer and middle portions and depressed intermediate sillreceiving parts, the lower flange having elevated ends and side bearings on its lower surface.
15. A body-bolster for railway-cars constructed with an upper and a lower flange, the upper flange being formed with elevated outer and middle parts, and depressed intermediate sill-receiving parts, the lower flange having an elevated end and a central part, said lower flange having side and center bearings on its lower surface adjacent to the elevated and central parts.
1G. A body-bolster for railway-cars constructed with an upper and lower flange, and a connecting-web, the upper flange being first downwardly depressed and then extending outwardly to form ledges to support the sills, and vertical webs reinforcing said ledges, the lower flange of said bolster being upwardly and outwardly depressed and extended to said ledges.
17. A body-bolster for railway-cars constructed with an upper and a lower flange,`
the lower flange being upwardly and outwardly depressed adjacent to said ends, and provided with perforated ears to which side bearings may be secured.
1S. In a body-bolster for railway-cars constructed with upper and lower flange united by a vertical web, said web being formed with an enlarged central portion adapted to receive a king-bolt, and sill-receiving recesses in the upper flange adjacent the said enlargement.
19. A body-bolster for railway-cars, constructed with an upper and lower flange united by a vertical web, said web being enlarged in its central portion to receive a kingbolt, a center bearing on said lower flange, and sill-receiving depressions in the upper flange between its ends and the enlargement.
20. A body-bolster for railway-cars, constructed with upper and lower horizontal flanges, a vertical web, an enlargement in said vertical web adapted to receive a kingbolt, center bearings, and sill-receiving recesses in the upper flange between the side bearings and said enlargement.
21. A bolster for railway-cars constructed with outer and intermediate horizontal portions adapted to support a car-floor, said horizontal portions being separated by recesses adapted to receive car-sills, elevated end portions, and side bearings secured to the under side of said bolster in said elevated portions.
22. A body-bolster for railway-cars constructed with elevated outer and middle parts, and depressed intermediate parts having grooves to receive the sills of' the car-body, and a lower flange formed with elevated outer parts.
