To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYERS W. KADEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Roanoke and State of: Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truck Side Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention has to do with side bear ings for, car trucks and the object thereof is to provide an improved arrangement of side bearing and truclcbolster members. With such object in view the invention consists of the formation, combination and arrangement of parts as will beherein described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a broken plan view showing a truck: equipped with a side bearing constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, vertical section of the same, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are eachpartial views ofthe same nature as Fig. 2 and each showing slightly modified forms of the invention.
Referring to these drawings there is shown a truck of the six-wheel type having the usual wheels 1, axles 2 and side frames 3. A truck bolster 1- receives the load from the car body upon a center plate 5 and transfers it to the side frames, axles and wheels. This bolster consists of a longitudinal member 6 and two spaced transverse members 7 and 8, the latter being supported at their ends by the side frames and supporting in turn near their centers the ends of the member 6.
These cross members 7 and 8 are flexible or yieldable with respect to each other on the springs 9 in and out of a horizontal plane. They are preferably constructed of flanged shape in cross section, an I-section being shown in the drawings, with open sides turned facing each other. A side-bearing bar 10 extends from one to the other of these bolster members 7 and 8 and is yieldably supported thereby so as not tointerfere with the aforesaid flexibility of the bolster construction. The bar, however, is guided or restrained so that it will not tilt sidewise out of a vertical position, there be ing cooperating and interengaging guides provided such as 11 on the bolster members and 12 on the side-bearing bar, these being preferably disposed at some distance from the point of support of the side-bearing bar upon the bolster, the better to resist the tendency of the bar to tilt out of its normal position. The bar is supported on the cross members 7 and 8 between the points of sup port of these members on the side frames or within the load-carrying zones of the cross bolsters. And'I support and guide this bar stantial vertical alinement by suitable means carried by the other flange. Thus in Figs. 1 and 2 the ends of the bar 10 extend within the open sides of the transverse bolster members and are supported on the bottom flanges thereof and there are guides 11 cast out from the upper flanges of these cross bolsters to engage cooperating guides 12 on the bar 10 to maintain this bar in its vertical position. In Fig. 3 is shown how an opening may be formed in the vertical web of the I and the ends of the bar 10 carried on a seat 13 so as to bring the side-bearing load central. And in Fig. 4 is shown how the ends of the bar 10 may be supported upon the top flanges of the bolster members and cooperating guides 14 and 15 be formed on the end of the bar and the lower flange of the bolster member respectively. And in none of these forms are the cross bolsters materially weakened by cutting away the flange members.
There are, of course, the usual side bearings 16 carried on the sidebearing bar 10, and this may be of any of the customary forms.
Thus I have provided an arrangement of side bearing that overcomes a number of existing difliculties. It will be evident that modifications in construction might be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a side bearing for car trucks, a truck bolster having a pair of spaced, transverse, load-carrying members having upper and lower flanges, means for supporting the ends of the same, and means for applying carbody loads thereto between the said supports, a side-bearing bar extending therebetween and supported thereby intermediate the ends of the bolster members and within the load-carrying zones of the same, said bar being supported upon one of said sets of flanges and there being means carried by the other set for guiding and a lining the said bar without materially cutting'away the metal of either flange.
2. In a side bearing for car trucks, a'truok bolster having a pair of spaced, transverse, load-carrying members having upper and lower flanges and being yieldable withrespect to each other in and out of a horizontal plane, means for supporting the ends of the same, and means for applying ear-body loads thereto between the said supports, a side-bearing bar extending therebetween and yieldab'ly supported thereby intermediate the ends of the' bolster members and Within the load-carrying zones of the same, said bar being supported upon one of-the said sets of flanges and guided bythecther set Without materially cutting away the'metal of either flange.
3. In a side bearing for car trucks, a truck bolster having a pair of spaced, transverse memberswith upper and lower flanges and with open adjacent sides, a side-bearing bar extending therebetween with its ends extending within the open sides of said bolster members and supported upon the lower flanges thereof, there being cooperating means carried by the other flanges and the ends. ofthe bar for holding the bar in vertical alinement, and a side bearing on the said ,bar.
4. In a side bearing for car trucks, a truck bolster haVingapa-ir of spaced transverse members with upper and lower flanges, and with open adjacent sides said bolster menr bers being yieldable with respect to each other in and out of a horizontal plane, a side-bearin "bar extending therebetween and yielda bly supported upon the lower BYERS W.
