such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
T his invention relates to a roller bearing, and particularly to a side bearing for railway cars, which bearing is adapted to be supported upon and carried by the truck bolster, and the roller thereof adapted to bear upon the wearing surface provided on the body bolster of the car.
It is an object of this invention to provide such a bearing having few parts, which parts can be made of rugged and simple castings and which can be easily assembled. It is another object of the invention to so construct the parts that certain thereof will be sprung into place with relation to the others, and when so positioned, will be normally retained in operative relation.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the followingdescription made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and in which,

Referring to the drawings, the bearing is seen to comprise a frame or housing member 1 which comprises parallel side walls 2 and end walls 3 which are of much less height than the walls 2. The end walls 3 are reinforced at each side by upwardly curved webs i which extend to the lower portion of the side walls 2 which are suitably downwardly curved to meet the same and form a casting of smooth outline and pleasing'ap' pearance. Web members which are, in effect, continuation of the side walls 2, ex-
tend in a straight line downwardly at each side of the end walls 3 outside thereof. The bottom of the housing member 1 comprises a rectangular flange member having the end portions and the side portions 6, which flangesurrounds a rectangular opening in the bottom of the housing member. At the longitudinal center of the flange member 6 are formed inwardly extending lug membore 7 which form a ledge on their upper surface and are beveled outwardly on their undersurface. The side walls 2 of the housing are also provided centrally with outstanding bosses 8, formed on the inside of the housing with channels 9 and the side walls 2 flare outwardly a short distance just above the longitudinal base flange member 6. Securing lugs are formed at each side of the housing member 1, and,.asshown in 1, there are two of these lugs extending in spaced relation on one side of the hearing and one on the opposite face. The lugs are provided with upstanding finishing bosses 10 through which the securing memhere are adapted to pass. The side members 2 of the housing are provided with a slot 2 which extends upwardly at each side from the center of the bearing in substan tial parallelism with the top of the bearing surface of the base member andthe side walls 2 are further provided with cored openings at each side of the longitudinal center to avoid excessive weight.
The base member of the bearing comprises a rectangular plate 11. As shown in Fig. 3, the top surface of this plate comprises two plane surfaces which slope downwardly toward the transverse center of the plate where they are joined by a surface taken on a substantially three inch radius. The ends of the plate 11 are beveled, as-shown in Fig. 3, and the plate is provided with suitable cored spaces on each underside formedbetween the side flanges thereof and a central longitudinal rib. The plate 11, at the sides thereof, and at the longitudinal center, is provided with recesses 12. asshown in Fig. 6, and the flanges 13 which extend along the sides of the plate below the bearing surface are carried over this recess and extend upwardly along the sides of the plate at its'center to the level of the top surface, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. The lateral surface of the plate, at 1ts central portion, is beveled downwardly and a laterally extending lug is thusformed at this portion, as clearly shown in F1g. 2. The plate is also provided with lugs 15 at the center of the end portions which extend outwardly slightly from the beveled end surface of the plate.
The roller member 16 of the bearing is suitably cored at its center to avoid excessive weight and apertures 17 extend from this cored porion axially of the roller at each side thereof. A locking pin 18 extends through the roller and has collars 19 formed thereon at some distance from each end. The roller member 16 is preferably made of special cast steel. The frame or housing member 2 will be of malleable iron or soft steel and the base member 11 will preferably be made of steel subjected to a suitable heat treatment. In assembling the bearing, the pin 18 will be placed in the roller 16 and the roller and then dropped into the frame member 1 from the bottom thereof. plate members 11 will then be placed in position with th ledge formed by portion l t at one side over the ledge in the housing formed by the lug 7. The plate will then occupy an inclined position in one side inclined downwardly away from the bottom of the housing. The plate will then be swung upwardly and the beveled surface of the portion 1% will contact with the under beveled surface ofthe portion 7 of the housing. The plate will then be forced or sprung into the housing member 1 and the ledge on the side of the plate will spring over the ledge formed by the lug 7 in the housing. When the plate is thus positioned it cannot drop out of the housing and will be prevented fron'i rising therein by the end surfaces th reof engaging the ends of the housing. The end of the pin 18, as shown, will project into the slot 2 f the side members 2 of the housing and the parts will be held in operative relation, as shown in Fig. 2. In the operation of the device the roller 16 will roll on the top surface of plate 11 and the pin 18 will travel in the slot 2, the rib or collars 19 contacting the ends of the apertures 17 and preventing endwise movement of pin 18.
With this construction it will be noted "that the roller member 16 bears only on the plate 11 and is not in any way supported upon the pins 18. The pin 18 merely rests on the bottom of the opening 17 and is loosely carried by said roller. t will also be noted that the ends of the pin 18 do not contact with the edges of the slots 2 in the side walls of the housing. The pin, however, is prevented from moving endwise out of the roller by the collars 19 and the roller is prevented from rising out of the housing The walls by the pin engaging the of the slots 2.
The lugs 15 will prevent undue end play of the plate 11 in the housing. The roller 16 will be returned to central position by gravity, th same rolling down the inclined plate 11 toward the center thereof.
The plate 11 is provided with the extended iorizontal flanges or ledges 13 at the sides thereof. These extend under the walls of the housing to provide an increased bearing surface on the truck bolster in order todistribute the load over a greater surface. Otherwise the load would be too concentrated.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has produced a simple and efficient side bearing. The parts are easily made, rugged in construction, and are so designed that they can be quickly and easily assembled without the use of securing belts or screws, and when once assembled will be retained in operative position.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form and details of the device without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in the mattor shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A side bearing for railway cars having in combination a frame member comprising a housing having side walls and a rectangular opening in the base thereof, a roller car ried between the side walls, and a bearing plate disposed in said opening in the housing on which said roller bears, said housing being provided on its interior with projecting ledges, and said bearing plate being provided with projecting ledges adapted to engage the ledges on said housing to hold said plate in position, the dimension of said plate and lugs being greater than the dimension of the opening in said housing, said plate being constructed and arranged to be sprung into said housing to bring said ledges into engagement.
2. A side bearing. for railway cars having in combination a housing member having side walls and having an opening in the base thereof, ledges projecting inwardly from said side walls, a roller supported in said housing, a bearing plate upon which said roller bears, said bearing plate being formed with ledges at each side thereof which ledges engage the said ledges on the housing, the width of said plate and ledge being greater than the opening between the ledges in said housing, said plate being constructed and arranged to be sprung into position so that the ledge thereof will engage the ledge in said housing and be supported tl'iereby.
3. A side bearing for railway cars having in combination a housing member comprising side walls, lugs projecting inwardly thereof at the longitudinal center thereof and forming ledges, a bearing plate disposed in said housing and having ledges formed at the side portions centrally thereof, a roller disposed in said housing and bearing upon said bearing plate, the projections forming the ledges in said housing having their lower edge beveled, the side plates being beveled at the upper portion forming said ledges, the width of the bearing plate at the ledge portions bein greater than the opening between the projections forming the ledges in said housing, said plate being constructed and arranged to be sprung into position to bring said l dges on said plate into engagement with the ledges on said housing.

a locking pin carried in said roller and projecting at each slde thereof, and a bearing plate upon which said roller bears, suppor ed by said housing in the opening in the base thereof, whereby the locking pin can be placed in the roller and the roller and locking pin then be placed in the housing,
the ends of the pin passing through the channels in the side walls thereof.
5. A side bearing for railwaycars having in combination a housing comprising side walls and having an opening through the bottom thereof, a bearing plate supported in said opening by the housing, a roller mounted on said plate, said walls having longitudinally extending slots therethrough and vertically extending slots at the inside thereof extending from said slots to the bottom of the housing, a pin carried by said roller and projecting at the ends thereof in the said longitudinal slots whereby the roller and pin can be dropped into the housing through the opening in the bottom thereof, the ends of the pin passing through the vertical slots and the plate can be placed in position in said opening.
6. A side bearing for railway cars comprising a housing member having an opening in the base thereof, lugs projecting inwardly in said base and forming ledges, a bearing plate disposed in said opening and having projecting ledges formed thereon adapted to engage the ledge in said housing and being supported thereby, the dimension of the plate across said ledges being greater than the opening in said housing bee3: can
tween the projections forming the ledges, the plates being constructed and arranged to be sprung into position to bring said ledges into engagement.
7. A device of the class described having combination a housing having fixed side and end walls, the end walls having a bottom surface inclined outwardly from the center of the housing, lugs projecting inwardly from the walls of the housing and a bearing plate disposed in said housing for support on said lugs, said bearing plate having outwardly inclined end surfaces and being prevented from rising in said housing by said surfaces engaging the outwardly inclined surfaces on the end walls of the housing.
8. A side bearing for railway cars having in combination, a housing having side and end walls with an opening at the bottom thereof, lugs projecting inwardly from said side walls forming ledges and having inwardly beveled bottom edges, a single plate disposed in said opening and having inwardly beveled top edges, said plate being adapted to be sprung into place in said opening, the said beveled edges passing each other whereby said plate is supported on said ledges.
9. The structure set forth in claim 8, said end walls of the housin being inclined outwardly adjacent the lower edges and the ends of said plate also being inclined outwardly and having projecting portions adapted to engage the inclined walls of the housing to prevent endwise movement of said plate. p
10. A side bearing for railway cars having in combination, a housing having side walls having parallel inner surfaces, a plate in the bottom of said housing, a roller in said housing bearing on said plate and having end surfaces moving adjacent the said inner surfaces of the side walls, said roller having a central opening therein and openings of smaller diameter extending through the ends thereof, said side walls having longitudinal slots therethrough extending substantially parallel to the top surface of said plate, a pin loosely carried in said roller projecting at the ends thereof and into said slots to prevent lifting of said roller, and having spaced enlarged collar portions litegral therewith adjacent to and nod to engage the inner walls of said roller to prevent endwise movement of said pin, said collar portions being of smaller diameter than the openings extending through the ends of said roller.
