UNITED STATES 1523393 PATENT OF CE.
HARRY W. STERTZBACH AND MERRITT R. HANSEN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR S TO' THE BUCKEYE STEEL CATINGS COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CAST CAR-TEUCK SIDE FRAME.
Application filed anuary 2, 1923. Serial`No. 610,316.
TO (LZZ whom it may Concern:
Be it known that we, HARRYWV. STERTZ- nACH and NlERRITT R. HANSEN, citizens of 'the United State-s, and residents ofnColumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new' same.
This 'invention relates to cast car truck side frames ofthe integral journal box type, the object of the present invention being to produce 'a construction whereby the stresses will be more evenly distributed than in the construction previously employed and deformation of the journal'box will.
'is to ,Connect the opposedcompression and tension members With the journal box in such a manner and in such close relation that shear will be practically eliminated from the box proper and deformation will be overcome. One form of the means by which the Objects of the invention are attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 'and the invention resides in certain novel features which will be particularly pointed out in the Claims following a detailed description. l
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side ele- Vation of a portion of a'side frame constructed in accordance with the present invention,
.Figure is a to plan vie-w thereof;
Figure 3 is a ottom plan view of the Sar nag v -Figure 4 is-a detail longitudinal section on the line 4 4Aof Figure 2.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes the compression member of the frame, 2 designates the spring seat, and 3 the diagonal tension member, all of invertcd channel form. 4 denotes the side column which usually extends between the spring seat and the compression member, and O denotes the journal box formed integral with the outer ends of the compression andtension members. In the present inventio, the transverse web or top plate ofvthe tension member 3 merges into the top plate 6 of the journal box at the point where said top plate of the journal box joins the inner side wall 7 of the box, as
shown most clearly in Fig. l. The Compression member is united with the top plate of the boX t the. outer -Side wall and the tension and compression members are thus brought close together while abrupt ofl'sets are avoided inasmuch as the tension member is not carried across a Corner of the box or terminated below the 'top of the same. It will also be noted that the top or transverse Web of the tension member merges directly 'into the top member of the Spring seat and thus forms a continuous direct connection between the top of the spring seat'and the top of the journal box, avoiding abrupt offsets and producing an arrangement which will most effectually resist the strains imposed under load. By merging the top` plate of the tension member into' the top plate of the journal box at the junction of the same with the side wall of the box, we are enabled to' provide the flared ribs 8 in the' angles defined by the Sides of the tension member and the side of the box Sothat the strains in this area are effectively distributed and the structure enabled to withstand the horizontal shearing action between l the compression and tension members.
4 Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
- 1. A cast side frame for car trucks having an integral spring seat, journal box, and tension member, the top 'of the ten- Sion member forming a direct continuous integral connection between the top of the spring seat and the top of the journal box.
2, A Cast side 'frame for car trucks comprising an integral journal box, spring seat, and tension member, ,the tension member 'being of inverted channel form with its transverse web forming a direct c ontinuous v ng of inverted channel form, the compression member being united With the top of the journal box at`the outer side thereof and the tension member forming n direct continuous connection between the top ot' the journal box and the top' of the Spring -seat 4. l\ cust side 'frame for car trucks eom prising a .journal box", a spring Seat, and :I tension member of inverted channel form, the loWer end of the tension member being' ntegrully-nnited \Vith the. top of the" Spring' Sent andthe upper end of the ten' SiOn memberbeing' integrully `united With the top ol? the journal box at, the junction of the same With the inner side \vnll of the boxi and the top of the tension member forming a' direct connection between the top of the journal box and the top of the Spring seat.
A casi: side frame 'for (Tar trucks comprising a journal box, :L compression member and a tenSion member, the compression membernnd the tension member being; of inverted channel form, the upper end of the top of the tension member being integrallv united With the top plnte Of the journal box at the Corner defined by the junction of Said top plute und the inner side Wall of t-lie box and the top of the compression member being integrnlly united With the top of the journal bOX at the junction of the same und the outer wall of the box.
G. 'A cnt side frame for (3211' trucks comprising' un integral journul box, and :l ten- SlUll member, the upper end of' the tension member being' united With the top plate of the journal box ut the inner side Wall of the box. and flared bracinz ribs uniting the side of the box With the side plates ot' the tension member :it the upper end ot' the tension member.
In te-Stimony wliereof, \Ve have signed this Specification in the presence of two HARRY W. STERTZBACH. `.\-I.'ERR'1`T R. HANSEN. Witnesses HARRY H. VVOLFE, JOHN C. MCPHERSON.
