Description

Patented Sept. 4,- 1923.
UNHTED STATES Parana Fr-ics HARRY E. DOERR, F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO SCULLIN STEEL U0., 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION 0F MISSOURI.
TRUCK SIDE I FRAME.
Application led October 20, 1922. Serial No. 595,719.
To all whom t may comer/n:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. Donna, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a T iuckJSide Frame, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a truck side frame.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable and etlicient side frame having journal boxes integrally formed therewith and in which strains incident to cooling are properly distributed and dissipated. v
Another object is to provide aside frame having journal boxes integrally formed therewith in which any tendency for the development of shrinkage cracks and cavities at the junction points of 'the journal box walls with the wedge lugs and tension member is overcome.
These and other objects are accomplished b means of the arrangement disclosed on tli'e accompanying sheet. of drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a truck side frame embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View of one end of the side frame and journal box; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of one end of the side frame and a journal box.
It will be noted that my invention is disclosed in connection with a side frame having a tension member 10, compression member 11 and journal boxes 12 all cast in a single piece.
.fournal boxes used heretofore have been provided with wedge lugs the thickness of which exceeded the thickness ot the walls of the journal box. As a result thereof, during the cooling ot the metal in the mold, the
parts ot different. thicknesses have cooled unevenly, resulting in shrinkage strains and cracks at the junction points between the wedge lugs and the side walls of the journal box. To overcome such shrinkage cracks, I
have provided wedge lugs the walls of which are of the same thickness as the walls of the journal box, and in this particular instance, the wedge lugs are of box section, having two end walls 13, an inner side wall 14 and an outer side wall 15, the latter of which forms a part of the journal box wall proper. By means of this arrangement, a journal box wedge lug is provided which avoids shrinkage cracks at the points mentioned and also otherwise is strong and durable. It will be noted that the side walls 13 of the wedge lugs terminate in downwardly extending tapering ribs 16 which extend downwardly below the point 17 of junction between the tension member 10 and the journal boxes 12. As a' result of having these ribs 16 so arranged shrinkage cracks anu shrinkage cavities are prevented at the junction points 17 mentioned.
Because of the arrangement and relative thickness of the walls of the wedge lugs and the journal box walls and of the relative disposition of the wedge lugs and their ribs 16 with respect to the inner side walls of the journal boxes and their relationship with respect to tlie junction points of the inner journal .box side walls with the tension member, shrinkage cracks and shrinkage cavities which heretofore have occurred are eliminated, the metal cooling uniformly in the mold so that all strains are properly distributed and dissipated.
It is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention `falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim: 4
1. A side frame including a tension member, a compression member, and journal boxes all cast integrally, said journal boxes having box shaped wedge lugs of the same thickness as the walls of the journal boxes, and the wedge lugs terminating in ribs extending below the junction points between said journal boxes and tension member whereby upon cooling of the metal in the mold shrinkage cracks and cavities at such points and around said lugs are prevented.
2. A side frame including a tension member, a compression member, and journal boxes all cast integrally, said journal boxes having wedge lugs of the same thickness as the walls of t-he journal boxes, and the wedge lugs terminating in downwardly extending ribs extending below the junction points between said journal boxes and tension member whereby upon cooling of the metal in the mold shrinkage cracks and cavities at such points and around said lugs are prevented. l
3. A side frame including a tension memmeeee ber, acom'pression member, andjournal boxes said 'ournel boxes and tension member, all cast' integrally, said journal boxes havwhere uien cooling of the metal in the ing box shaped wedge lugs the Walls of mold s rin age cracks and cavities et such 10 'which are of the same thickness as the walls points and around said 1u s are prevent/ed.
5 of the journal boxes, and certain walls of Signed at St. Louis, Missouri, this 17th said wedge lugs terminating in tapering ribs day of October, 1922.. extending below the junction points between i HARRY E. DOERR.
