CAR-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1915.
Application filed April 10, 1915. Serial No. 20,378.
To all whom it may; concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. WHITRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Trucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in car truck, the object being to provide improved means for interlocking the bolster with the truck side frames, and it consists in the arrangement of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a truck'side frame and bolster in position therein; Fig. 2 is a view in plan of the same; Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line a2-w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a modification.
The truck side frame may be of any approved construction but in the present instance I have shown it as an integral cast steel structure, in which 1 is the upper arch, 2 the inverted arch and 3 the columns connecting the arches, and forming the bolster opening of the same width from top to bottom.
The upper arch 1 is provided on its lower face with a depending projection 4 located centrally with relation to the bolster opening 5, but of less width than the latter, as
clearly shown in Fig. 1. The length of the depending projection 4 is preferably less than the depth of the bolster, and the projection itself may be from the outer wall only of the top arch 1, as shown in Fig. 3,
the projection being suitably braced by the 7 Internal integral. web 6, or the projection may be from both walls of the arch as shown at 4 in Fig. 4, the two projectlons being connected and braced by the integral webs 6*. p
7 is the bolster, preferably made of cast metal and hollow, and provided in its upper face, adjacent each end, with a recess 8 to receive the projection 4 or 4. When the projection from the top arch is a single one as in Fig. 3, the outer margin of the recess is provided with a depending flange 9,
braced by the webs 10, and when the projection is a double one, both the inner and outer margins are similarly flanged so as to form enlarged bearing surfaces for the projection 4 or 4 as the case may be.
With this construction and arrangement of parts I dispense with the column guides on the bolster, and with a bolster opening enlarged to permit of the passage of said guides, and also avoid the use of parts projecting upwardly from the truck bolster. The projection from the side frame resting within recesses in the bolster, interlocks the said members, and while it does not interfere with the normal movements of the bolster, it prevents it from moving longitudinally.
The bolster is supported within the upper end of the bolster openings in the side frames and in contact with the depending projection, by springs (not shown) in the usual and well known manner, and may be removed by simply removing the springs and permitting the bolster to drop until its top clears the lower free ends of the depending projection, after which it can be removed endwise through either bolster opening.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent, is
1. Ina car truck, the combination of a side frame having a bolster opening and a projection from the upper arch of the frame depending into the bolster opening, and a bolster recessed on its upper. face to receive the projection.
2. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having a bolster opening and a with a recess to receive the said projection.
4. In a car truck, the combination of cast metal side frames each having a bolster opening and an integral. projection depend ing into said opening said pro ections being of less width than. the openings and a bolster having recesses in its upper face to receive said projections.
5. In a car truck, the combination of cast metal side frames each having a bolster opening and an integral projection depending into said opening and of less width than the latter, and a bolster provided in its up per face with recesses to receive the, said projections, the outer walls or margin of said recesses having depending flanges, sub- 10 stantially as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing witnesses.
