Application filed March 14, 1910. Serial No. 549,105.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, Oswnnn S. Penman, a resident ot littsbin'gh, in the county ot Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolsters, oi? which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved bolster or transom for railway cars, and more particularly to that class of bolsters consisting of an integral cast-metal structrn'e.
In the accinnpanying drawings, which illustrate applications of my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan of my bolster in the form of a truclebolster; Fig. 2, a side elevational view of the form of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and lvertical sectional views respectively taken on lines ill-TH and IV -JV of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a perspective view of a modified form of bolster embodying my invention; Fig. (5, a vertical sectional view of the form of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7, a view similar to Fig. 6 showing a construction having curved webs connecting the top and bottom member at a bolster.
deterring to the drawings, and first to the term of Fig. 1, 2 designates the top 1nember of the bolster, fl the lmttom-member and t the column-bearin surfaces. As shown, the top-membcr is preferably formed with side-bearings and a center-bearing (3. 7 designates a wall connecting the center-bearing and the bottom-member and is adapted to receive the usual king-bolt. The top and bottom members are connected by two web- Inembcrs S which latter extend throughout the length of the bolster proper and project beyond the ends thereof to enter into the formation oi" the column-bearing surfaces 41-. lVebanember-s 8 are curved as shown at a at the center of the bolster and are spaced farther apart at the center than at other points in the length oi the bolster proper. Members 8 are disposed in vertical planes lying wholly within the longitudinal edges o't both the top and bottom members ol' the bolster proper, but in the torm of Fig. 1, the ends thereol, beyond the bolster ends, are curved outwardly as shown at Z) and "form the colunnnbearing surtaces t. The tam-member ot the bolster oi the term of Fig. 1. is slightly wider than its bottommember and the holster has a central deepened portion.
In the form oi. bolster shown by Fig. 5, which is a modified torm of holster en'ibodying my invention, the top-member 10 and the bottom-niember til are connected by two web-members 'li! ol? Lbeam shape. In this town, as in the term ol? Fig. l. the members l2 lie in !)llllltr inside the longitudinal edges ol the top and bottom members and extend throughout the length of the holster.
'lhe 'tO'l'lll o'l" holster illustrated by Fig. 7 is similar to the lorm of Fig. 5, with the exception that the wehnncmbers 13 are curved members.
lVhat l claim is:
A bolster tor cars consisting of an integral metallic structure comprising a top member termed with a circular center-hearing and side-bearings. a bottom member, an annular l ingbolt wall, and two spaced webmembers connecting the top and bottom members, said welrmembers each having a central curved portion extending under and rcin'lionaing the center-boaring near its periphery, said curved portions being spaced away trom the king-bolt wall, outer curved portions extending under the side-bearings, and straight end portions, said latter portions forming column engaging members.
In testimony whereo't :l, a'lliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
