Description
1927. I July 12, G. T. JOHNSON ET AL CAST CAR TRUCK SIDE FRAME Filed March 1926 Gm: H2115 'Patented July 12, .1927.
UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE '1. JOHNSON AND HARRY W. STERTZBA CH, OF COLUMBUS OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE BUCKEYE STEEL CASTINGS COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
. CAST CAR-TRUCK SIDE Application filed March 25, 1926. Serial No. 97,841.
This invention relates to car trucks and has special reference to east side frames of the type shown in Letters-Patent N0. 1,523,- 793, granted to H. W. Stertzbaoh and M. R.
6 Hansen, January 20, 1925, in which the journal box is integral with tension and compression members which have the formof inverted channels. The object of the present invention is to provide a construction which will connect the side walls of the compression chamber in the region of the j ournal ox and overcome the tendency to buckle under the compresson and shearing stresses.
The invention is illustrated in the accom-' l panying drawing and will be hereinafter fully described and particularly defined.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a side frame embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same; Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is .a detail section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. v
The side frame comprises a column 1, a journal .box 2, a' compression member 3, and a tension member 'connecting the upperand lower ends respectively of the column with the top of the journal box. The tension member is in the form of an inverted chan-. nel, the top plate of same lying in an inclined plane extending from the bottom of the column to the upper inner corner of the journal box.
' only in the form of an inverted channel between the columns and its plate 6 instead of following the plane of the top edges of the side walls, extends'obliquely from the 40 top of the frame at the top of the column to the inner upper corner of the journal box to which it is united close to the junction of the journal box and the tension member. Approximately over the center" of the ournal box, a bridge 7 unites the side wal of 'the compression member and prevents them from buckling under vertical load and causes The compression member is an essential element of the structure and not bya mere accessory having only the functions of a tie.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is v 1. A east side frame for car trucks having a column, a journal .box, a compression member, and a tension member, the plate of the tension member being at the top of the same and united with the journal box at the inner corner thereof and the plate of the compression member extending obliquely with respect to its sides from a point over the column to the journal box and united with the box approximately at the junction of the tension member therewith' '2. A cast side frame for car trucks including anintegral journal box, and a compression member, comprising a late and side walls integrally united with t e journal box, the plate being disposed obliquely with respect tothe edges of the side walls and uniting the side walls in the region of said integral journal box.
3. A. east side frame for car trucks including an integral journal box, a compression member comprising a transverse plate'and side walls all integrally united with the top of the integral journal box, the plate being disposed obliquely with respect to the edges of the side walls and uniting said walls, and a brid e uniting the upper edges of the walls a vs the journal box.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification.
GEORGE T. JOHNSON.
HARRY W. STERTZBACH.
