Abstract

162,723. Emery, T. Dec. 31, 1919. Self-driving machines and plant.-In a selfdriving motor of the unbalanced-wheel type, a number of weights or springs carried by a disc rotating on a fixed axis are caused to produce an unbalanced effect by means of arms radiating from a movable axis eccentric to the fixed axis. In a modification, the weights or springs are replaced by rollers engaging with a semicircular cam-track eccentrically disposed relatively to the fixed axis. Fig. 1 shows one form of the apparatus in which a disc 1, carrying two sets of studs 10, 11, one near the edge of the disc and the other nearer the centre, is stated to be rotated by weights 7 carried by separate loosely-mounted arms 6 pivoted on an eccentric pivot B. The weights 7 operate the disc 1 through the intermediary of rings 12, passing round the studs 10, 11. Owing to the eccentric mounting of the arms 6, the rings 12 on one side of the disc engage with the pins 10, while on the other side they engage with the pins 11, a greater mechanical advantage on one side than the other being stated to be thus obtained. The discs 1 are mounted in pairs on a common shaft A. In modifications (1) the rings 12 are dispensed with and the weighted arms 6 carry studs working in cam tracks on the discs 1, (2) the weights are carried by chains which are forced out on one side of the discs 1 by levers carried by the arms 6 so as to give a greater turning moment on one side than the other, (3) the weighted chains are replaced by endless bands maintained in tension by pulleys, (4) the pulleys are replaced by a second pair of discs 1 having arms 6 of opposite eccentricity to that of the first pair of discs so that both pairs of discs tend to rotate in the same direction, (5) the weights are replaced by springs attached at their inner ends to studs near the centre of the discs 1 and at their outer ends to bell-crank levers carried by the arms 6, (6) the weights are replaced by rollers 59, Fig. 20, carried on levers connected to the arms 6 and engaging a cam track 60, (7) springs may be used in conjunction with the levers in the previous arrangement, (8) the weights may be carried by lazytong mechanisms operated by the arms 6 so as to project to a. greater distance on one side of the disc than the other, (9) the springs used in various modifications may be replaced by cylinders of compressed air.
