Abstract
162,671. Berthier, A. V. P. M. Nov. 28, 1918, [Convention date]. Machine guns.-Relates to breechblocks for automatic machine guns of the kind wherein the rear portion of the block is tilted relatively to the front portion for the purpose of locking the block in firing position, and consists in providing a special form of knuckle-joint between the two parts of the breech-block. The rear part 4 of the block, which is connected to the front part 6 by T- shaped arcuate ribs 12, Fig. 2, has inclined grooves 42, Fig. 1, which are engaged by projections 50 on the gas-actuated striker-post 9 during its rearward movement to lower the portion 24 of the bolt from a recess in the receiver 2. After unlocking, the breech-block is moved rearwards and retained by the engagement of a pivoted sear 56 with a projection 54 on the striker-post. During this movement the empty cartridge case is withdrawn by an extractor 30 and deflected downwards through an opening 66 in the actuating- rod 52 by an ejector 28 moving in grooves 26, 22 in the block. On pressing the thumb-piece 58 of the sear, the striker-post is drawn forwards by a tension spring 52 and engaging behind an abutment 44 on the bolt carries it forwards. The bolt has projections 20 whereby it pushes before it a fresh cartridge from the magazine and when the cartridge is right home the striker-post, moving forward alone, tilts the rear end of the block for locking it and then fires the cartridge.
