Sewing-machines; surface threads, attaching.- A surface thread 20 is interlaced between the stitches formed by two or more needles 4, 5, by means of an oscillating thread engaging hook 28, a guide eye 27 carried by the needle-bar and a fixed cam-like guiding surface 41. As the thread loop is extended towards the left, the surface 41 causes the thread to slip backwards and thereby the upper arm of the thread loop is caused to lie between the needles. The downward movement of the guide eye 27 in the formation of the next stitches brings the surface thread 20 forwardly along the surface 41 into position to be engaged by the thread-hook. In the form shown the surface 41 forms one wall of a slot 43 but the thread does not engage the other wall and it may be omitted.
