Combined open fire-places and cooking-stoves comprise a closable open grate with a superposed oven and side hobs adapted to be hidden from view by hinged or sliding panels. The stove shown comprises a barless grate 10 with a front 24 of adjustable inclination and preferably two independent boilers 11, 12 at the rear for hot-water supply and for heating radiators. The oven 13 rests on a perforated cast - iron plate 18 above the grate and is provided with a door 17 resembling a canopy and a ventilator 60. The front of the fire may be completely enclosed by a blower 25 formed of sheet - iron with a central laver of asbestos or the like 28, Fig. 7. The gases may be caused to pass from the back of the fire either over the boilers into a central vertical flue 31 controlled by a damper 33, or into flues beneath the boilers leading to vertical flues on each side of the flue 31 and with separate dampers. Flues 43 controlled by dampers 46 lead from the sides of the grate to beneath side hobs 14, 15, whence the gases pass up flues 42 to the top of the oven and thence to the chimney flue 32. Hinged or sliding doors 48 close in the space above the hot-plates and may be arranged to close the dampers 46 automatically when they are shut. The hob flues 43 are each formed of three specially-shaped firebricks 55, 56, 57, and may be reinforced with a metal lining where they open into the grate. Ventilating-tubes 59 lead from above the hotplates to the flue 32.
