Soundboards for pianofortes and other stringed instruments such as violins are arched by the shrinkage in drying of canvas &c. applied under tension and treated with adhesive. The canvas may be applied in strips and at an angle to the joints of the component boards. Cambered gauging-bars may be used' on the front or back to determine when the required curvature has been reached, being then either removed or fixed permanently. Shaped bars secured to the front or back may constrain the curving effect. The front of the soundboard is varnished as usual.
