Violins and like bowed instruments. - The tone is improved by temporarily applying an increased pressure in the region of the bridge; the force may be increased progressively and varied intermittently. As shown, a violin belly is mounted on a wooden support provided w i t h tuning-pegs d and tailpiece c, and four metal wires, preferably pianoforte strings, are stretched over a strong bridge f, which may be supported by a prop h as well as by the usual bar g. After tuning to normal pitch for a week, the pitch may be raised week by week a semi-tone at a time for 4-8 weeks. The strings may bo variably stopped by a presser or cord.
