Pianoforte soundboards.-Supplementary soundboards 17 whose edges are free to vibrate for substantially the whole of their length are attached by wooden members 18, Fig. 1, 21, Fig. 4, or 25, Fig. 6, having their end grain abutting on, and at right angles to, either the main soundboard 20 or the bars 15 thereon. In Fig. 1, supplementary soundboards 17 are shown arranged at an angle to the main soundboard 14 of a grand pianoforte, the attachment members 18 being formed as stiffening strips projecting at right angles into the bars 15. Soundposts 19, which may carry additional supplementary soundboards, may extend at an angle from other bars 15 to the strips 18 to assist in supporting the soundboards 17. In modifications, one or more supplementary soundboards are secured on the main soundboard perpendicular thereto. In Fig. 4, two soundboards 17 are arranged obliquely in a V-groove in the attachment member 21, and a perpendicular soundboard may be added. Fig. 6 shows one or more supplementary soundboards 17 arranged parallel to the main soundboard 20. The supplementary soundboards are preferably rectangular with the grain running longitudinally.
