Abstract

Ink-ribbon mechanism; letter-spacing mechanism.-The ink-ribbon mechanism and the escapement-mechanism for letter-spacing are mounted on the base 14, Fig. 1, of a paper-carriage arranged for case-shift movements and for detachment, and the operative connections between the universal bar and the ribbon vibrator and the dog-rocker include separable parts in sliding contact to allow for the case-shift movements and detachment. The dog-rocker 83, Figs. 3 and 5, and a bell-crank 94 connected to the ribbon vibrator 90 are respectively provided with contact pins 107, 111 for loose engagement with fingers 106, 108 on an arm 105 on the rock-shaft 64, Fig. 1, carrying the universal bar 63. The bell-crank 94 has variable strokes for a two-colour ribbon, or no stroke for stencilling, as determined by a stepped stop member 96 adjusted by means of a finger-piece 101. The finger 108 is pivoted to yield as required by the variable strokes of the bell-crank, and the parts are located so that the vibrator pin 111 is engaged before the escapement pin 107. The ribbon spools 120 are shown as carried by brackets 118 on the base 14, to which is also secured a guide-member 92 for the vibrator. The escapement wheel 79 is associated with a rack pinion 76 on a pin 77 in a bracket 78 on the base 14, and is controlled by fast and loose dogs 82, 80 mounted by a pin 84 on the rocker 83, which is pivoted by side lugs 85 on pins 86 threaded through bearings 87 on the base 14. The loose dog 80 is slidable on a pin 81 on the fast dog 82, and is retracted by a spring 88. Specification 149,991 is referred to. Carriage-releasing arrangements. - The loose escapement dog 80, Figs. 3 and 5, has a triangular slot permitting movement relatively to the pin 84 to release the dog from the escapement wheel, the movement being effected by means of a pin 159 on the dog and a 'bail 160, Fig. 1, located above the pin 159 and depressed by means of a finger-piece 165 on a bell-crank 163 provided with a pin engaging a forked extension on one of the arms of the bail.
