Abstract

159,805. Russell, E. L. Nov. 4, 1919. Valves; valve-gear; regulating.-In engines particularly intended for isolated power or lighting units, a rotary conical inlet and exhaust valve 90, driven by mechanism which automatically raises it from the seating when the friction becomes excessive, is mounted on a shaft 96 which also carries a centrifugal governor 111, the valve, the shaft, and the governor being removable as a unit through the valve casing 91 after detaching the cover 133 and the governor lever 117. The valve shaft 96 is supported in a socket bearing 122<1> which comes away with it. The sraft is driven in the forward direction only, at one-fourth speed, by spiral gears 120, 120<1> and a one-way clutch 121. The valve is driven from the shaft through a coiled spring 99, Fig. 4, if the resistance of the valve to rotation increases, the shaft overruns the valve, and a quickthreaded screw 95 on the shaft, turning in the part 94 of the valve, raises the latter from its seat.
