To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Barns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Argenta, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful'lmprovements in Engine-Speed Regulators, of which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to speed regulating and adjusting means for internal combustion engines, the object in view,being to provide a simple attachment associated with the intake valve and fly wheel controlled governor mechanism of an engine, whereby the amplitude of movement of the member controlling the opening and closing of the intake valve may be varied and regulated in such manner as to increase or diminish the speed of the engine and obtain any desired number of revolutions per minute up to the speed limit of the engine shaft, thereby adapting at speeds lower than the maximum with a proportionate saving of fuel and lubricant.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a face view of the fly wheel of an engine showing centrifugal governor mechanism carried thereby.
Fig. 2 is a view Fig. 1 showing the relation between the stem of the intake valve of the engine and the governor controlled lever for operating said valve stem, also showing the adjustable stop of this invention.

The governor mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings is of a tyge now in common use and needs only su cient description to identify the relation existing between the governor actuated lever and the speed regulating device of this invention. 1 designates the fly wheel on the hub of which is mounted a loose collar 2 which is adapted to oscillate relatively to and upon the hub 3 of the fly wheel. 4 designates a governor weight at the free end of an arm 5 pivotally onnected to the fly wheel at 6. As the speed of the enthe collar 2 is partly turned and the collar 12 is crowded away from the collar 2 thereby decreasing the opening movement of the valve 18 to admit less mixture.
The collar 2 is provided on its outer face with cam projections 10 which are adapted to coiiperate with other cam projections 11 on a rotary slide collar 12, the teeth or projections 11 having cam faces 13 against 10 on the collar 2 ride for the purpose of pushing the slide collar awayfrom the hub of the fly-wheel. The collar 12 bears against a shoe 14 carried by the shorter arm 15 of an elbow lever the other longer arm 16 of which is connected with the stem 17 of the engine intake valve 18. The elbow lever is pivotally mounted at 19 on a supporting arm 20 which is shown as extending to an engine face plate 21 carrying the casing of the intake valve 18.
The device of this invention comprises an adjustable stop by means of which the amplitude of movement of the lever 16 may be increased or diminished according to the engine speed desired. This regulating device in the preferred embodiment thereof comprises what may be termed a cap screw 22 having an elongated head 23 which is centrally and longitudinally bored and internally threaded as shown at 24 to receive an adjusting screw 25 which is threaded into the head 23 and which may be locked or prevented from turning by means of a jam nut 26. The screw 25 is provided with a head 27 which underlies the lever 16' and limits the downward movement thereof. The screw 22 is designed to be substituted for one of the screws of the intake valve casing, one of such screws bein shown at 28.
To apply the speed regulating device of this invention, it is only necessary to remove one of the old cap screws 28 and substitute therefor the regulating device of this Then by loosening the jam nut 26 and raising or lowering the head 27 of the adjusting screw, which is accomplished by turning said screw inwardly or outwardly, the movement of the lever 16 is readily increased or diminished for the purpose of regulating the degree of opening movement ofthe intake valve 18. If the valve 18 is allowed to open to its full extent which is ordinarily about one-quarter of an inch, the engine will develop its full rated H. P. and the full number of revolutionsper minute whereas if the head27 of the regulating device is raised, the opening movement of the valve 18 will be correspondingly limited thereby reducing the amount of mixture allowed to pass by the valve, causing the engine to operate at a lower speed and effecting a proportionate economy in the consumption of fuel and lubricant.
It will be noted that the valve 18 is operated by suction. The lever 16 serves as an adjustable speed control stop for limiting the opening movement of the valve, the stop 27 being provided to limit the maximum naaaeoe movement of the lever under the influence of the speed responsive device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim Speed regulating and adjustin means for internal combustion engines eniliodying in combination with a fly wheel, and the intake valve, a speed control lever connected with the stem of said valve and serving to limit the movement of the valve away from its seat, a speed responsive device associated with the fly lever, and an adjustable stop. arrangedin the path of said lever for limiting the maximum movement of the lever under the influence of the speed responsive device.
