Abstract

158,221. Griscom-Russell Co., (Assignees of Brown, S.). Jan. 26, 1920, [Convention date]. Water, distilling; multiple-effect apparatus; bulk evaporators. - In evaporating systems, particularly those for distilling make-up feed-water for steam-engine plants, a portion of the residue is evaporated by its own heat and the vapour used for pre-heating the feed-water for the evaporating plant. The Figure shows a doubleeffect steam-heated evaporator of ordinary type. The residue leaves the second effect 2 at a pressure above that of the atmosphere and a temperature above the normal boiling-point, and passes by a pipe 9 to a trap 11 whence the steam generated by the reduction of the pressure passes by a pipe 15 to the pipe 12 by which exhaust steam is supplied to the feed-heater 13. When the pressure of the water leaving the effect 2 is not much above that of the atmosphere the trap 11 may be dispensed with, the pipes 9 and 12 being directly connected and the waste liquid escaping through a U-pipe long enough to prevent the escape of steam.
