Description

(54) REFILLS FOR BALL PENS AND A METHOD OF MANUFACTURING SAME (71) We, ALBE S.A., a Company organized under the laws of Switzerland, of 6982 Agno, Switzerland, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a refill for a ball point pen.
A known ball point pen refill comprises a tube which holds the ink and a ball holder inserted in the one end of the tube, the refill having a profile from the ball point comprising a first tapered section followed by a cylindrical section leading to a second tapered section, followed by a second cylindrical section of larger diameter than the first cylindrical section, the first tapered section, the first cylindrical section and the second tapered section being defined by the holder.
The present invention has as its object the provision of a refill for a ball point pen, which refill can be used in a pen interchangeably with a known refill as described and of corresponding dimensions but which will be cheaper to manufacture.
Since the holder of a known refill as described is nearly always made of valuable material such as brass or rustless steel and for the machining of same parts a moderate working time is required. From this, it follows that it is very important to be able to reduce the cost by reducing the dimensions of the point or simplifying the machining operations.
According to the invention there is provided a refill for a ball point pen which is substantially as hereinbefore described with reterence to Figures 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.
The invention is illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings, and in the said drawings: Fig. 1 is an axial section of a known refill; Fig. 2 is an axial section of a refill according to the present invention; and Fig. 3 is a partial section on a larger scale of the refill of Fig. 2.
The known refill (Fig. 1) comprises the metal tube 1 generally made of brass or of rustless steel filled with ink and the ball holder 2 carrying the ball 3 and forced inserted into the tube to a distance AB or IH.
The holder 2, which defines the first tapered section EDF, the first cylindrical section DEOC and the second tapered section CGHB, is solid except for the axial bore, and requires a considerable quantity of valuable material. In refills in accordance with the invention, the holder is replaced by the small holder indicated by 4 and 5 in Figures 2 and 3.
The holder of Figs. 2 and 3 is limited to the part 5 containing the ball 3, and the short stem 4 which is forced in the tube 1.
Due to the demand for the material required for making the part 4-5, and owing to the fact that the length of the bore of the holder is very much shorter than that of a holder of a known refill, a bore which may be made in less time, with consequent less wear and tear of tools, and thereby there results a substantial economy in manufacture compared with the actual manufacture of holder of the known refill.
In its turn, the metal tube 1, which is thin walled and therefore requires little material, is profiled to define all or nearly all of the first cylindrical section DFG'C' and the second tapered section ClG'H'B'. The profile of the refill of Fig. 2 reproduces exactly the profile BCDEFGH of the known refill so as to be interchangeable therewith in an appropriate ball point pen casing.
In this way, the refill according to the present invention may be inserted in any pen which will accommodate the refill of Fig. 1.
It is arranged that the material constituting the point 4-5 as well as the tube 1 according to the invention may be of any kind without departing from the scope of the claim which follows.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS : - 1. A refill for a ball point pen substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawing.
