Abstract

1,032,863. Reservoir marking instrument. MENTMORE MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. March 7, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 9216/62. Heading B6P. The valve body 8 of a reservoir marking instrument with a felt nib 7 is of a non-metallic elastic material such as rubber. The nib is retained in the recessed portion 8c of the body 8 which abuts a stationary cross-member 9 fixed into the barrel 1 of the pen after the valve body and nib have been assembled. An annular valve seat 5 is formed between the larger diameter of the barrel 1 forming the reservoir and the smaller diameter of the passage 6 leading to the writing tip end. Inwardly directed pressure to the nib, Fig. 6, compresses the valve body 8 axially and expands it radially, so that ink flows from the reservoir to the passage 6, where it is absorbed by the felt nib 7. The nib is of square cross-section in a circular passage 6. In a modification, Figs. 7 to 10 (not shown), the felt nib is fitted within a tube formed with apertures near the end adjacent the valve body, the felt nib bulging through these apertures into the space between the tube and the wall of the passage 6. In a further modification, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), the felt nib is formed with an axial bore and a rigid element is engaged as a tight sliding fit in the bore. In a final embodiment, Fig. 13 and 14 (not shown), the valve body is of a modified shape and the stationary cross-member 9 is replaced by an angularly bent strip of springy non-corrodible metal which engages the internal wall of the barrel 1 with its transverse edges.
