Abstract

A writing or painting instrument is provided with a main body 1 having a pressurisable container on which main body is mounted a writing portion 4 which effects opening/closing of a valve provided in the main body. When the writing portion is pushed relative to the main body, cover 3 moves towards body portion 1 and stand pipe 2a is pushed so that the valve of the body portion is opened. Ink is ejected under the effect of the propellant in said portion and passes through to hole 6 in the writing portion. <IMAGE>

Description

Writinq or painting instrument The present invention relates to a liquid applicator such as a writing or painting instrument, and more particularly to one for applying a broad ink or paint line in a single stroke.
In order to obtain a broad ink or paint line in a single stroke with a conventional writing or painting instrument, it is necessary to increase the area of contact between the applicator means, such as a brush tip, of the instrument and the writing or painting surface. In such conventional instruments, it is necessary to increase the feed rate of ink or paint as the width of the ink or paint line is broadened. However, in conventional writing or painting instruments, there is no provision for swiftly feeding a large quantity of ink or paint to the applicator means of the instrument. The ink or paint is usually gravity fed to the applicator means of the instrument so that there is a limit to the feed rate of the ink or paint. Such a limit leads to a decrease in the width of the ink or paint line or in the speed of application in the writing or painting operation. These decreases are disadvantages inherent in conventional writing or painting instruments.
We have now found it possible to provide an improved writing or painting instrument for applying a broad ink or paint line in a single operation.
Thus, according to the present invention, there is provided a writing or painting instrument which comprises: a main body portion having a pressure container and valve means, said body portion serving to contain an application liquid, such as ink or paint, and a fluid propellant; and an applicator portion which is mounted on a part of the main body portion and which enables an opening/closing operation of the valve means of the main body portion.
In the writing or painting instrument of the invention, it is convenient to effect an opening/closing operation of the valve means of the main body portion by pushing and releasing the applicator portion of the instrument, so that the application liquid contained by the main body of the instrument is fed to the applicator portion of the instrument by the propellant fluid.
The applicator portion of the instrument is preferably axially movably mounted on the main body portion to enable the applicator portion to move in a direction substantially parallel to an axial line of the main body portion and thereby effect opening/closing of the valve means. The applicator portion may be mounted to the main body portion of the instrument through a fixture member which may be an annular member fixed to an upper part of the main body portion of the instrument or may be a housing for receiving the main body portion of the instrument.
Preferably, the applicator portion of the instrument is provided with a brush-tip made of a gas- or fluid-permeable material, which brush-tip is preferably provided with a throughhole.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a partially sectional side view of a marking pen according to the invention.
The drawing shows a marking pen which is an embodiment of the present invention, in which the reference numeral 1 denotes a main body portion of the marking pen, which main body 1 has an aerosol bomb-like construction which may be constructed similarly to that of conventional aerosol containers. The main body portion 1 is filled with ink and liquified petroleum gas (hereinafter referred to as LPG) which acts as an aerosol propellant. Other propellants, such as those conventionally employed in aerosol containers may also be used, such as a Freon (R\tX gas, nitrogen gas and the like. The aerosol propellant should not adversely affect the properties of the ink or paint contained by the main body of the writing or painting instrument.
A fixing ring-like member 5 made of a synthetic resin is fixed to an upper portion of the main body portion 1. The ring-like member 5 is provided with a central opening portion in which is slidably inserted a connection cover 3 which is reciprocally movable in an axial direction of the body portion 1.
A writing portion 4 of the marking pen is mounted on the upper part of the cover 3.
The ring-like member 5 may take the form of a housing to receive the entirety of the main body portion 1, and, in this case, an upper portion of the housing may have the same construction as that of the member 3 for supporting the writing portion 4 of the marking pen.
At the lower end of the connection portion of the connection cover 3, there is provided a-i;rojecting stopper 7 for preventing the cover 3 from being easily disengaged from the ring-like member 5.
In a central part of the cover 3, there is provided a tubular projection 8 to receive a stand pipe 2a provided in the main body portion 1. A front end of the stand pipe 2a is inserted into the tubular projection 8 when the connection cover 3 is mounted on the main body portion 1 of the marking pen, and abuts a shoulder portion of the tubular projection 8, which shoulder portion is provided on an inner wall of the tubular projection 8. Consequently, the stand pipe 2a is moved as the connection cover 3 is reciprocally moved in the axial direction of the main body portion 1 so that an opening/closing operation of the valve of the main body portion 1 takes place.
At one end of the cover 3 there is provided the writing portion 4 of the marking pen. The writing portion 4 comrpises a double layered sheet-like element having a sheet-like expanded sponge layer 4a and a sheet-like open-cell sponge layer 4b. The expanded sponge layer 4a is fixed to the connection cover 3. A thin through-hole 6 is provided in a substantially central portion of the writing portion 4. The diameter of the thin through-hole 6 is preferably about 2mm. If desired more than one through-hole 6 may be provided. When a plurality of throughholes 6 is provided, each may have a thinner diameter than about 2 mm. However, it is not preferable to employ too thin throughholes 6 because they may become clogged.
It is not necessary to employ a double-layered construction in the writing portion 4 of the marking pen. A single-layer construction of open-cell sponge may be employed if desired. In this case, ink is directly fed to the writing portion 4 of the open-cell sponge layer, while the aerosol propellant is released through the entirety of the writing portion 4. It is possible that the through-hole 6 is not necessary.
In addition, the writing portion 4 may be made of any other suitable material such as felt.
In use, the surface of the brush tip of the writing portion 4 may be abutted against the surface of the object to be written upon or painted, and slightly pushed against the object. In the pushing operation, the cover 3 is moved toward the main body portion 1 and the stand pipe 2a pushed so that the valve of the main body 1 is opened, whereby ink is ejected from the stand pipe 2a under the effect of the aerosol propellant. The thus ejected ink passes through the tubular projection 8 and the cover 3, and then through the thin throughhole 6. The ink is thereby fed to the open-cell sponge layer 4b of the writing portion 4 to enable the user to write or paint in the desired manner. Since the ink is forcibly fed by the aerosol propellant, the feed rate of ink is remarkably increased relative to that of conventional writing or painting instruments in which the ink or paint is gravity fed. There is therefore no fear that thin spots are produced in writing or painting a broad ink or paint line in a single stroke. In addition, it is possible to readily adjust the pressure applied to the writing portion 4 in the writing operation with the marking pen. Consequently, according to the desired size of the ink or paint line, it is possible to readily adjust the feed rate of ink or paint, so that the marking pen, i.e. the writing or painting instrument of the present invention is very advantageous.
