Abstract
157,834. Machado, F. Aug. 19, 1918, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Circular-flow type; reversing.-In a reversible turbine, a three-way cock 26 admits steam or other motive fluid to either of two opposite annular chambers in the end plates of the casing 10 communicating through hand-controlled valves with forward nozzles 13 and reversing nozzles 14, which direct the steam on to the two sets of vanes 32, 33 carried by the rotor 29, round which the steam flows until it exhausts through the ports 21, 22. The vanes 32 span the space between lateral flanges on the rotor, and may have various forms. For example, Fig. 5, the vane 32 may have a flat face 35 and a curved face with a roller 37 therebetween which runs on stator bearing surfaces and is perforated to circulate lubricant. Another form of the vane 32 is shown in Fig. 8, where two adjustably connected pieces 40, 41 make up the vane. In a modification, Fig. 9, the rotor carries three sets of vanes 32, 33, 33<a>, the vanes 33 housing the roller bearings 37, and the motive fluid on its way from the nozzles 13, 14 to the exhaust ports 22, 21 is redirected on to the rotor by stator passages 42, 43 arranged as shown. In a further modification, the passages 42, 43 are dispensed with, and by making the stator eccentric to the rotor a varying clearance is left between these members which permits additional expansion of the steam during forward working.
