Abstract

156,206. Smith, W. S. June 30, 1919, [Convention date]. Joints for link-work.-In ball-joints for link-work, the socket-members are constructed with the "grain" of the metal substantially parallel to their working-faces, so that they rapidly become polished by wear. With this object, and for lightness, they may be pressed from sheet-metal. As applied to the joints of an automobile steering- gear, the preferably tubular drag-link 1 has sockets 3 at each end containing the ballend 5 of a joint-pin 6, and against the balls are pressed, by springs 13, socket-members 10, 11<1> and 10, 11 with spheroidal working-faces. The socket-members may have depressions 17 to contain grease and corresponding projections 18 to serve as spigots for the spring &c. The piece 11 and left-hand spring-abutment 15 are formed as screwed plugs, whereby the springs may be adjusted, and are slotted at 20 for split pins 19. To assemble the joint, the ball-ends 5 are passed through the large openings 8 of key-hole slots 8, 9 in the sockets 3.
