Abstract

230,974. Ricardo, H. R. Feb. 22, 1924. Self - aligning bearings, such as that between a crank pin B, Fig. 1, and tihe sleeve valve A of an internal combustion engine. Between an outer one piece member E and the pin B, both formed of an intermediate member having an outer spherical bearing surface F formed of hardened steel, is an intermediate member having an outer spherical bearing surface F formed of Babbitt or similar metal. Where the intermediate member is free to slide on the pin, as shown, both the outer and inner bearing surfaces of the member are formed of Babbitt metal. The intermediate member comprises a skeleton D formed of bronze or brass, around which the Babbitt metal is cast. This is effected by holding the skeleton D in place between the member E and a dummy pin B<1>, Fig. 3, by side plates G with projections G<1>, molten Babbitt metal being fed through holes G<2>, the surfaces of the member E and pin B' being treated to prevent adhesion of the metal. Oil grooves F<1> are formed in the metal F. Flats are .provided on the body D to permit its insertion in the member E while preventing it from working out if the Babbitt metal fuses. Alternatively, a washer may be provided on the pin B to limit movement along the pin.
