Description

D. ZIMMERMANN AND C. PLATTIER.
JOINT FOR SPARKING PLUGS AND THE LlKE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 28,1919.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
UNlTED PATENT OFFICE.
DESIRE ZIMIVIERMANN AND CLOVIS PLATTIER, OF MARSEILLE, FRANCE.
JOINT FOR SPARKING PLUG-S AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 28, 1919.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, Diisimi Zmnrnn- MAN and CLovls PLATTIER, citizens of the Republic of France, residing at 12 Rue dJ na, Marseille, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Joints for Sparking Plugs and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in joints for sparking plugs and the like. According to the invention a tight joint is ob tained by means of a ring or washer or" aluminium or the like placed in a circular fiat recess between the insulator and the base of the plug and fitted between these two parts by means of a circular tool.
The invention is described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which one form of construction according to the present invention is illustrated in vertical sec tion. v
The insulator of the plug is in two parts A, and B, 01": porcelain, steatite or the like, partially fitting one in the other. The part .B has a conical shoulder which bears on another shoulder, which is also conical, arranged inside the metal base or shell F. The part A rests on an aluminium ring 0 which bears on a fiat seat in the body F and on a similar seat formed on the part B.
The central electrode E is threaded and carries a nut G abutting against the part A and holding the parts A and B together.
The central electrode E has a circular shoulder forming a joint on a metal ring H lodged in a circular recess in the low r part of the insulator so that by tightening up the nut G the joint is maintained. The joint between the body F and the insulat- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920. Serial No. 300,342.
ing piece B is obtained by compressing by means of a circular, conical tool, a thick washer C of aluminium to jam it by pressure between the two parts F and B. The conical circular groove I is formed by forcing back the metal of the washer C by the tool.
The parts are then assembled to form an integral piece.
This joint formed by the spinning of a malleable metal can be applied to all types or" plugs.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is l. A spark plug, comprising a shell, a two-part insulator, one part thereof being seated within the shell, a metallic ring within the shell and securing said insulator part its seat, and means for retaining the other insulator part in contact with said ring.
:2. A spark plug, comprising a shell, a pair of tubular insulator members, a metallic ring within said shell for retaining one of said insulator members therein, said ring being provided on one side thereof with an annular groove, and means for securing the other insulator member in contact with said ring along the edges of said groove.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
L. RoNDmR, OUY MOXKET.
