Abstract

The engine has a carburettor (44) for mixing a hydrocarbon fuel with air. A gas generating cell (30) with anode (24) and cathode (26) fitted in a housing (90), which electrodes are respectively inserted into a compartment (A, B) and are connected to the terminals of a current generator (12, 22), is connected by way of a pipeline (34) to the carburettor (44). The partition wall (94) between the compartments (A, B) has an opening (122) for connecting the compartments (A, B). The plates of the cathodes (26) are formed in such a way that the amount by which their active surface increases for an infinitesimal increase of the level of the electrolytic solution present in this compartment (A) is greater than the corresponding amount in the event of an immediately preceding infinitesimal increase of the level. The hydrogen emitted is thereby controlled as a function of the pressure in the pipeline (34), so that only as much hydrogen is produced as can be burnt by the engine. No costly and dangerous hydrogen reservoirs are therefore required. <IMAGE>
