Abstract

1409260 Anode catalyst for alkaline fuel cell EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 29 Nov 1972 [29 Dec 1971 (2)] 55082/72 Heading H1B A fuel cell comprises : (a) an anode comprising an electrically-conductive base carrying a bimetallic catalyst consisting of non-alloyed palladium and ruthenium, (b) a cathode, (c) an aqueous electrolyte having a pH of at least 8, and (d) means for supplying to the anode a water-miscible fuel which is a compound of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The base of the anode is preferably a screen of silver and the catalyst may be bonded directly thereto by polyvinyl chloride; preferably, however, the catalyst is impregnated into a porous carbon carrier and the impregnated carrier is formed into a paste with a PVC binder and the mixture bonded to the screen. The preferred electrolyte is a carbonate-bicarbonate buffer having a pH of about 10À2; alternative electrolytes are cesium dibasic phosphate, cesium tribasic phosphate, and potassium hydroxide. The preferred fuel is methanol, alternative fuels being ethanol and formaldehyde. In Fig. 1 the fuel cell 10 is divided into anode and cathode compartments 16, 17, respectively, by an ion-permeable membrane 14 and the fuel-electrolyte mixture is circulated through a gas separator 23 to remove CO 2 from the electrolyte. A number of cells are arranged in a stack to form a battery.
