Abstract

1448788 Fuel cell batteries SOC GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES ALSTHOM & CIE 4 April 1974 [10 April 1973] 15103/74 Heading H1B A fuel cell battery comprises a number of cells each of which has a porous separator 1, a porous cathode 2, a porous anode 3 and corrugated current collectors 5, 7 which are disposed in contact with the electrodes and form fuel and oxidant compartments. Each separator is made of polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene felt or P.T.F.E. and may include fillers such as talc or asbestos. The cathode consists of a catalyst such as powdered silver and a binding agent such as P.T.F.E. The cathode may be sintered and provided with an expanded stainless steel insert 4. Alternatively the cathode catalyst may be silver oxide, activated carbon or silver supported by carbon. The anode is made of sintered cobalt or nickel powder with a P.T.F.E. binder and is also provided with a stainless steel insert 6. Alternatively the anode catalyst may comprise alloys of cobalt and silver or their oxides or Raney nickel and binders such as polyvinyl chloride or polypropylene. The battery may be fed with a fuel such as hydrazine and an oxidant such as hydrogen peroxide, the reactants being fed to the battery with the electrolyte.
