Abstract
1504775 Fuel cell batteries SOC GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES ALSTHOM ET CIE 6 Aug 1975 [9 Aug 1974] 32928/75 Heading H1B A fuel cell battery comprises a bipolar electrode 1 supplied on its anode face with a fuel and on its cathode face with an oxidant, the electrode being wound in a spiral having several turns, and a separator 3, the e.m.f. of the battery being equal to the e.m.f. of a single turn multiplied by the number of turns. The bipolar electrode consists of a plastics sheet containing powder such as carbon, graphite or metal. The faces of the sheet, which constitute the anode and the cathode, may have catalysts deposited thereon. Corrugations 2 in the electrode provide paths for the fuel such as hydrogen, hydrazine or methanol and for the oxidant such as air, oxygen or hydrogen peroxide. Current collectors 4, 5 are provided. In a first modification the corrugations in the electrode extend in a direction parallel to the axis of the battery whilst in a second modification the electrode has orthogonal corrugations on each face.
