Abstract

A gas-tight electric accumulator with aqueous electrolyte contains within its case (9), on the one hand, a recombination arrangement (6) in which the hydrogen and oxygen gases produced during operation of the accumulator are recombined to form water. On the other hand, the accumulator case (9) contains an arrangement (10 1,2 with 12) from which hydrogen or oxygen can be output under control. The output takes place whenever the gases developed during operation of the accumulator have an unstoichiometric composition. The arrangement can be a solid substance (10) which emits gas, for example, when the pressure is lowered or the temperature is increased. The arrangement can also be formed by connecting together an inert auxiliary electrode (12) and a main electrode (1 2) for generating one of the gases, the connecting-together being effected by a pressure-dependent switch (11). Due to the recombination, it is easier to keep the electrolyte level in the cell constant and, in addition, the risk of explosions is greatly reduced.
