Abstract
894,454. Fuel cells. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 5, 1960 [Oct. 13, 1959], No. 34692/59. Class 53. A fuel cell of the hydrogenoxygen type uses a desiccant to remove water vapour from the cell, either by circulating the excess hydrogen through a desiccator or incorporating the desiccant in a portion 21 of the cell. An envelope 22 of a material that melts at the cell operating temperature prevents de-watering of the electrolyte 7 during shelflife. The desiccant may be replaced by a substance, e.g. a hydride of an alkali or an alkaline earth metal such as hydrides of lithium and calcium, that reacts with water vapour to evolve hydrogen.
