Driving-gear for winding and paying-out apparatus.-Comprises apparatus such as for hauling out landfast objects in which a lever, operated by hand, by horse gear, or by engine power, acts through ratchet gearing and pulley tackle on a rope in such a manner that the rope is hauled in for each stroke of the lever, backward or forward. A frame a, anchored by a rope d, carries a combined pulley sheave and double ratchet wheel b acted upon by double pawls h pivoted on a lever g. The pawls are connected by a pin k which may be engaged by a hook j to hold the pawls out of gear. Retaining pawls l and a holding hook n are provided on the frame a. The hauling rope t is made fast to a block u, passes round a block v, which is secured to the load, to the sheave b, and round the block u to a link q which is pivoted to the lever g at a less radius than that of the sheave b. Thus, the block v, and therefore the load, is hauled towards the sheave b at each forward or backward stroke of the lever. The lever may be reciprocated, as shown in Fig. 4, by links A operated by eccentrics B on a shaft C rotated by an engine or by the horse gear shown. A sheave D is engaged by a draught-rope I which passes round pulleys F and H, the pulley H being carried by links G pivoted to other links E which carry the pulleys F and are pivoted on the shaft C. When either end of the rope I is pulled the links G swing round and jam the pulleys F, H, on the rope to some extent, ensuring a good grip of the rope on the sheave D. The bottom of the groove of the sheave b is lined with lead or other soft metal to increase the adhesion of the rope t. To renew the lead lining a leather strap is placed around the sheave, and the lead is poured in through a loop or buckle of the strap. In a modification the rope is wound on the sheave or drum b instead of merely passing round it.
